Milligan I have been looking for a reasonably priced duplex ADF scanner for some time now, I want to scan a file cabinet of documents and shred the originals. I thought this HP was it, it isn't. I spent several hours over a few days giving this guy a workout. I scanned stacks of bank statements (30-35 pages at a time) (8.5 x 11) and mortgage documents (8.5 x 14) both single sided and double sided. Several times the ADF jammed (roller slipped and eventually gave up) and I had to man handle the stuck page out, I could find no way to release its grasp of the paper. These were not glossy pages, just typical bank statements. Other times one or two pages of a stack of 35 would scan in only a third of the page. It cannot scan duplex pages longer then 12 inches, I don't know why. Duplex scanning takes more then twice as long as simplex because it has only a single scanner and must flip the page (I think it does this flipping twice). The software wasn't smart enough to handle scanning mix length pages, if I had a document (for example: mortgage papers) with a mix of letter and legal size pages I had to tell the software that all the pages were 14 inches long otherwise it truncated the legal size to 11 inches. It all boils down to a lack of trust for me. Before I go shredding originals of these documents I need to be able to trust that I have good electronic copies and this scanner/software didn't establish that trust. 39 of 40 people found the following review helpful. NOT for the novice. By P. M. Gross Windows XP. SP2. Single Gateway Profile computer. MS Office. Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional. USB Connected. Mostly used for scanning documents directly into *.PDF files WITHOUT using the OCR feature. We bought this scanner a few months ago to replace a 7 year old HP Scanner, also with a document feeder. The HP Scanjet 5590 is not something you can expect to work right out of the box; it isn't as plug-and-play as we would have liked. The included software is extensive and takes a long time to load (and to repair!). It may also require some tweaks to work at all, one of which we got from HP on the telephone and another (to improve scans into PDF) we found on their web site. Once working, the software is still not "intuitive". There are many complexities to scanning and the HP software has a significant learning curve. The scanner warms up quickly; the document feeder is fast and reasonably reliable but can jam if it doesn't like the paper fed through it. The double sided scan works but again, the paper must be be good quality. We have had no difficulty scanning a dozen or more pages either through the document feeder or indivual scan into a single PDF file. We have also scanned single photos into *.jpg with good results. We have not scanned slides or negatives. We only use the software controls and can't comment on the button features. We have not yet had to partially disassemble and manually clean the document feeder and have no comment on this feature either. In summery: If you have some computer experience, especially with scanning and you have time to sort out the glitches, you can probably make the 5590 work for you and get good results. If you are a relative novice, this may not be the right place to start. Add: 09/08. We purchased a new computer running on VISTA (former had XP) and attached the scanner. A software download was required. The unit installed easily and worked faster and with fewer glitches than previously. UPDATE - early 2010. We began to have software issues when the computer kept saying that certain files were unavavilable. The solution (per HP) is to download the proper software, move it to a SEPARTATE FOLDER, click to open and EXPAND the files and then do the installation. 91 of 100 people found the following review helpful. Scan bills, receipts, reports and more. It’s the perfect way to easily save electronic files of all your everyday documents. Text Enhancement with Auto Area Segmentation (AAS) Through this feature, text document scans are sharpened, thereby enhancing text recognition. In addition, all background data is removed from the scan, making it easier than ever to achieve clear scans from double–sided documents that have "bleed–through" from images or text printed on the reverse side. Auto Area Segmentation is a function that allows the scanner to segment a scanned document, identifying all text as "text areas" and all images as "image areas". Text areas are scanned in black–and–white, while image areas are scanned in half–tone. This offers the best scanning mode for all elements, and ensures that all text and image data is preserved simultaneously. Color Enhance With Color Enhance, users can select and enhance a color from the RGB color channel, even when scanning in black–and–white. This can help bring out a particular element that might not otherwise show up clearly in a black–and–white scan, such as a signature made with a light–blue pen. Color Dropout Color Dropout allows users to remove a color from the RGB color channel — a color that might cause noise or other image issues during a document scan. For example, a user scanning an invoice printed on pink paper could use "Color Dropout: Red" to ignore all red elements and pull out the crisp black text. Event Manager Epson Event Manager allows you to configure jobs so they can be initiated with one touch, making the Epson Perfection V500 Office easy and convenient. With the V500 Office, you can use one-touch buttons to scan–to–copy, scan–to–email, or create a searchable PDF. Halper Where the scientist ended up with his head spliced onto a fly's body and was flying around saying "Help Me, Help Me"? That's the V500 Office scanner. The base of the scanner is the V500 Photo scanner. The top comes from something else. They work together, but aesthetically they don't exactly match...they aren't even made out of the same color of plastic. When you first open the box, you find a complete V500 Photo scanner and a separate Automatic Document Feeder. All of the setup instructions refer to the base unit. The sheet is labeled V500 Office, but the ADF unit isn't illustrated or mentioned. (Step One: Unpack; Step two: Install Software; Step Three: Connect and turn on; Step Four: Scan a photo...etc...) When you've finished, you end up with a very nice photo scanner and the feeder still in its plastic bag. (The instructions are up on the Epson website...to install the feeder, you turn off and open the top of the scanner, unplug the wire connecting the top to the base, lift the top vertically and it will separate from the bottom. Two pegs on the feeder fit into matching holes in the base. Fold it down, plug the power/control wire into connector on the base and fit the horseshoe shaped wire into the tilted input tray. Turn it back on and you should be in business. The software is intelligent enough to detect the presence of the ADF unit and adjust accordingly.) Installation, though, is something that's only done once...what's really important is how well the scanner works. So, let's go through the various parts... Scanner Body - As I mentioned, the main body of the scanner is from the V500 Photo Scanner. Because it's designed to scan negatives as well as pictures, it has a fairly high optical resolution and a decent, although not spectacular dynamic range (D=3.4, if you're into the actual spec. The D value is a measure of how well a scanner can capture shadow and highlight detail...the higher the value the better. The V700 measures at D=4.0. Professional grade scanners can be substantially higher, while I've seen inexpensive units spec'ed as low as 1.8.) When using the glass platen, you can scan up to a standard 8.5"x11" letter-size paper. Legal size pages can be scanned using the document feeder. Automatic Document Feeder - The ADF holds roughly 30 sheets of paper for scanning. It's strictly a single sided scanner. You'll need to run the paper through twice if you need to scan both sides of a document and then merge the two files together. I've had some serious problems with the feeder. It's common for it to pick up the top sheet off the stack, but then not feed it through the scanner. It also appears that the ADF has some other "unusual" features...this question, for example, is on the Epson website FAQ: Q: The automatic document feeder pulls two sheets of paper when I click Preview. Can I make it pull only one sheet? A: No. It seems like the firmware needs a bit of updating. When it was working right, the ADF worked well. The scanning speed is dependent on the resolution and the speed of the computer that it's connected to. The linearity seems pretty good, with my scans of graph paper showing only a few hiccups. V500 Photo Scanner Lid - The photo scanner lid comes with holders for both slides and various sizes of negatives. The normal white reflective surface can be removed and replaced with one of the negative holders. This allows the built-in light source to shine through the negatives. You can scan two strips of 35mm film, 120 or 220 film and larger negatives. If somebody has an archive of old 4x5 view camera negatives, this will convert them to digital form, but, frankly, for that kind of work, you should use a scanner with a better dynamic range. You NEVER want to send photos through the ADF, they're too likely to get scratched or mangled. Software - Epson's software package

Good product...if used on the correct system By Brienne Ebersole I had problems with this product on my lap top - Windows 7. The snapshot/copy did not work, which completely defeated the point. I got to see the negatives, but could not convert to digital photos. Once I downloaded the driver and program on my main computer, which is Windows 2000 or XP, it worked great! 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. FS1200 Film Scanner By CHARLENE ROBERTS NEW! SVP Digital Film 35mm Negatives & Slides Scanner (Black in color)! For some time I had wanted a scanner for film and negatives. The flatbed one I had seemed so cumbersome and when I saw this one I drooled. The price of $129.00 for other similar devices was a little steep for my budget. The reviews were not giving me warm fuzzy feelings either. Some of the comments were of cropped heads, poor quality pictures, horrible customer service and a few other horrors. I persevered and found the SVP FS1200 for $49.00 also on Amazon. There were only 5 reviews, but I reasoned that price was better than $129.00 and worse things could happen. So I ordered it and within days it arrived. The box said "Easy as 1-2-3 to install. So I dove in and it was that easy...actually I made it harder b/c I couldn't believe it could be so easy, so I kept looking for the hard part. I followed the instructions and everything was going well. I have Windows XP. In the beginning of the booklet it tells how to set up the film and slides. It then goes into how to install the software and driver, followed by using the slide and film converter. This part threw me for a loop (this is where I was trying to make it harder), b/c they say to calibrate the scanner. However, the instructions just before say not to insert the tray, but it doesn't say when to insert the tray after calibrating. Once I reread the manual, I realized they did tell you how to insert the tray, and I just assumed you should do so once it is calibrated. So that maybe took 5 more minutes to figure out. No biggie. I put in 3 slides and the first one came up and then the second one. The third one had a full body shot and the head was chopped off. Oh! Right someone had mentioned that in a review of the other similar product. You are able to move the slides while they are in the tray by sliding it back or forth, which shows up as a big blur. Don't get scared, it will adjust back to a clear sharp image. The scan was quick, it was clear and you can adjust color and brightness there or once it is on the computer with the software. The headless one, I rescanned and rotated the slide around so that the next time I scanned it was on the side. Once in the software I rotated it to full Head and body image. I played around with the software a bit, which was easy to use and offered some basic features. I am sure you can use whatever software you have. All in all I was impressed with the speed it downloaded and installed, with the swift capture of the images and clarity of the images. It took no more than 30 minutes. I will post back after I play a little more. I also just received Dragon Naturally 10 and now I want to play with that for a bit to see if it is as easy as they say. What a fun day to play on the computer with software and gadgets! 13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Beware Mac Users By tattersae This negative scanner is NOT Mac compatible!!! The return policies of this company make it worthless to try and make a return- you have 14 days after you receive it, you cannot return "computer products," you have to pay shipping back, AND a 20% restocking fee. The software loaded up OK, but the instructions are incompleat and fuzzy. Do'nt expect to do more than a few dozen coppies in a sitting. After 10 coppies you must do a save, then start all over again. If you are like me I have hundreds of negatives to copy. With this unit it will take me months to complete the project.I found it obserd that there is no web site or help line phone number, the software locks up and all I can do is shut down and re-start.Joe B. By Neal Pollack I remember when these cost over $1000 so when I saw one for $38.99, and free shipping, I thought I'd give it a shot knowing I could return it if it didn't work. I'm still running Windows XP Pro on all my computers and thought I might have a problem on my main computer as I have a USB flat bed scanner and web cam installed. Sure enough, it didn't play well at all. Loaded it onto another computer with no capture devices installed and it worked fine with negative and slides. The included software is intuitive and the manual is adequate. There are basic editing controls, which I haven't had time to explore fully, but for best results I believe I'd use this at its highest resolution for capture and another program for final tweaking. It really depends on the quality you want in your final image. If you have photos and a decent flat bed scanner, you don't need this. If all you have are negatives and slides, this is the way to go considering the price of turning negatives and slides into photos. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. SVP FS1000 FILM SCANNER By boro Performs very well. Certainly meets my needs and is easy to use. A great way to "resurrect" old slides and update. Accompanying photo program adds yet a few more editing options and print quality is very good. Compact, it occupies a permanent location on my computer desk. See all 3 customer reviews...

Why I returned the Canoscan 8800f and re-purchased the HP g4050 By gregg I am a husband and father of 3 young children with lots of pre-digital photos of our children, along with perhaps a couple of thousand old family photos dating back to the 1930s. Like many, I narrowed the search for a scanner to the Canoscan 8800f, The Epson V500, and the HP G4050. There have been a number of reviews that have focused on scanning negatives and slides. My review will focus on scanning photos. There are numerous reviews of these 3 scanners. Throwing out the highs and the lows, the Epson generally gets excellent scan quality reviews, with some mention of buggy drivers and flimsy slide and negative accessories. The Canon gets pretty good reviews on build quality and photo scan quality and most people seem to think its software has a cleaner interface. The HP is seen as the most ruggedly built and the largest in size, but is viewed as performing slowly and having software that is either difficult to make work under Vista (apparently that has now been fixed by HP with full drivers being released) or buggy with a lot of effort with HP tech support being needed to fix things (though once fixed) the scanner gets excellent reviews on photo scan quality. I saw the Epson, Canon, and HP scanners at a couple of local retailers and had the opportunity to at least compare their build quality. The Epson feels inexpensively made (very much so), the Canon feels fairly well made, and the HP appears to be the best built of the 3 scanners, by a fair margin. The HP is big, but it has a slightly larger scanning area to allow for 4 4x6 photos to be scanned at once. Plus, photos from my parents and grandparents are all odd little sizes, so having a little extra space on the glass is helpful when trying to scan multiple photos. I My system: AMD 4000 dual core, 3 gig of ram, a 500 gig hard drive and a 320 gig hard drive, standard video card, running XP. A decently powered system, but not super fast. I am a fairly experienced computer user and have really gotten into Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements over the last year or two. They are not commercial applications, but over the past year I have come to see they are pretty powerful programs and allow the home user to get genuinely professional level results for family projects. The comparison: the Epson, Canon, and HP are in the same price range, but they can very by more than $50 depending upon sales, rebates, and promotions. It seems to be generally accepted that the next step up is the Epson V700 or V750, about $500 and $700, respectively. I purchased the HP, returned it, purchased the Canon, returned it, and then re-purchased the HP. The Canon was not a bad scanner and is in fact pretty speedy. The Canon and the Epson use LED lighting, which is quicker than the HP lighting. This does make a definite difference, but fast or slow is a subjective opinion for these scanners. I use my scanner at night when the children are asleep. I am scanning and restoring family photos; so, I am in no rush. I don't want to have a scanner that is super slow, but I do not mind if the scanner is not fast. That is a good thing, because the Canon is quick and the HP is definitely not. The Canon software is a bit easier to use, but the HP, while not super easy is fairly straightforward to use once you play with it for a bit. The HP is noisy, though. Will it wake my children and wife? No, but both HP scanners (the one I returned and the one I kept) from different sellers sounded the same. The output from the scanners also is the same, which at least says something for manufacturing consistency. The scan quality is what did it for me. To compare I scanned a few old black and white photos and a few color photos, in particular a few wedding prints that have a slight matte finish. As most people know who scan photos matte finishes make the resulting scan

Wilson My best friend bought me this scanner for Christmas (at my request). I picked this particular model because of the low price, high resolution, and it being a flatbed scanner that can also handle negatives. I've been using it for several days now and I have to say, I LOVE this scanner! It has to be the quietest scanner I've ever seen. I was on the phone with my mom while scanning and she never heard it. It is also fast. At the highest resolution, previewing for negative scanning takes maybe 20 seconds. The actual scan takes less than two minutes. The quality of the scans is awesome, regardless of whether you are doing flatbed scanning, color negatives, or black and white negatives (true black & white at that). Software wise, the TWAIN driver is very very nice with tons of options. It works perfectly on my XP Pro system with a fairly low end graphics card. The bundled PhotoStudio sucks, however, and I don't use it. I find Irfanview (available free on-line) works quite nicely for most of my needs, including acting as a facilitator for batch scanning to file. I have not tried the included OmniPage, however I have used an earlier version so I expect it will work quite nicely. The other review here seems to dismiss this scanner as being more cheaply made. Personally, it seems nicely made to me. If you are abusive towards your equipment, then yeah, spend twice as much for something all metal. I, however, treat my equipment well. The plastic negative holder works just fine for me, and is very easy to use. I don't see anything wrong with the plastic hinge either. It works smoothly and seems well designed. Another nice thing about this scanner is that it doesn't not weigh much at all! I like this since I have a glass desk which can't hold a ton of weight. The design is nice too. It looks nice and sleek against my blue glass. All in all, I would highly recommend this scanner for anyone looking for a good, fast all purpose scanner for under $100. Well worth the money (and the free super saving shipping is a nice bonus). Best Christmas present I got. 547 of 571 people found the following review helpful. CanoScan 4400F vs. 8600F By Caveat Emptor Its difficult to find comparison specs between some of the new CanoScans. After looking at both the 4400F and 8600F, besides the 8600F's ability to scan medium-format negatives and being bundled with a lite version of Photoshop, the 8600 is also simply a more heavy duty machine. A significant difference is the lid. The 8600 has metal hinges and adjusts vertically on metal supports. It will also stay open through 90 deg of motion. The 4400 has a plastic hinge. To accomodate books or thick materials, it has a "break-away" articulating hinge-- when you place something of thickness like a book on the flatbed the lid hinge snaps open to accomodate the item. The 4400 hinge will not stay open on its own. Both lids are rather heavy and solid (the 8600's more so) which is nice if you scan books or things that need to lie flat. But since the 4400's hinge is all plastic and has a small piece of plastic that locks the articulating or adjusting part of the hinge, it does not really seem to lend itself to lots of book scans. It seems like this latch or lock will eventually break; as is, it sounds like its breaking each time it snaps open to accomodate a book. (Since I make a lot of book scans I decided that the 8600 was better for this, because of its lid's adjustment and hinge construction and because of its heavy lid, despite the extra money. If I was typically scanning from photocopies or thin origins, the 4400 would have been fine.) A last thing about the lid construction: the 8600 also has a heavy-duty cable to power the light in the lid, while the 4400 provides power to the lid by a thin tape cable that is visible in the hinge and seems somewhat vulnerable to heavy use.

The installation software on the CD did not work, saying that there a file called hpzrein01 has failed. Once I managed to download the 168Mb software from HP website, the problem again persisted. I've tried in two different laptops (Windows XP) and the problem was the same. In the end, I managed to just download the driver without the full software. The scans are horribly done. I wanted to use it to scan photos but it keeps on scanning the part of the lid that has the entrance for the negatives. This means that I would have to crop the picture to get the actual photo size. Add to this that the scan was super slow, I cannot believe this product actually came out the market. I am sorry but whoever at HP that gave the green light for this product to come out should look for another job. He would do HP (and the world) a favor. 18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. HP Scanjet G3110 By James B. Berry I bought the Scanjet G3110 primarily to bring forward to digital my 2" x 2" 35mm color slide collection. Scanning at 400 pixels per inch has produced great colors beyond 2000 x 2000 format. Importing the raw scan file into IPhoto for it's editing features, and display options, has produced a satisfying conversion update to utilize today's technology options. A new life for those images of mine, which haven't seen light in 39 years, has been an opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations of the family. The scanner is basic, with a solid 35mm slide or negative adapter built into the lid, has a versatile menu of scanning options for file save formats. It works! I would buy another, and another. 20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Run away from this scanner By Mary A. Denney HP Scanjet G3110 Photo Scanner I bought this scanner from another source and can't return it to the store FAST ENOUGH. It isn't designed to do multiple scans in a row - it immediately takes you to the 'creative' page when you're finished scanning so you have to go back into the scan program over and over to scan multiple photographs. It won't allow setting dpi ahead of time and it won't remember any your settings between scans. It takes mine 55 seconds to scan one photograph at 300 dpi and won't recognize multiple photographs placed on the bed. It also crashed my Windows XP system several times and locked up the computer completely twice. You'd be smart to pay a few more dollars and buy a REAL scanner! Not even worth one star. I bought this product to transper my parents slides to digital so we can look at them easier. How many people have a broken slide projector at home? Slides were the "in" thing back in the 60's and 70's so everyone has a bunch in the basement. The cheapest price to send the slides out that I found was .19 cents each so that was not an option when you have about 2000 plus. This is so easy to use that I could not believe it. It came with software and you can hook the scanner directly up to the computer but you can just use a SD card and then pop it in the computer when your done. The scanner has adjustments but I left it on the default settings and it worked great. The view screen is pretty small but it lets you see what your doing. It takes longer to put the slides in the holder than to scan it (about 5 seconds to scan each slide). I did about 420 slides in about 2 hours one day so it goes pretty quick. The quality of the scan is only as good as the slide itself but it still is better than having the slides in a box in the basement and nobody looks at them. If you want the quickest and cheapest way to get slides to digital this is your machine. The scanner also works well on film negatives. You just have to change the setting on the scanner and your in business. 33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Great Scans, Miserable Slide Tray By RLR I bought this scanner based on the favorable reviews on Amazon. I've been using it for three days now, and I find the scans to be super-quick and of good quality, BUT, the three-station slide tray is torture. That's the only reason I knocked my rating down from five stars to three. There are two problems with the tray. First, the moulded recesses for the slides are too small, making loading slides a chore and requiring much more attention than is should. Secondly, the tray is tricky to open - I'm always afraid that I'll crack the plastic when I go to remove the slides. 39 of 42 people found the following review helpful. GOOD SCANNER By John E. Hetsch I BOUGHT THIS ITEM NOT EXPECTING EXCELLENT RESULTS, BUT WAS I EVER WRONG. RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, IT WAS EASY TO USE. THE INSTRUCTIONS LEFT A LITTLE TO BE DESIRED, BUT WITH A FEW USES, IT WAS VERY EASY TO OPERATE. IT IS PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD. I HAVE HAD THIS SCANNER NOW FOR A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AND SO FAR, I HAVE SCANNED BETWEEN ONE THOUSAND AND FIFTEEN HUNDRED SLIDES, ALL WITH WONDERFUL RESULTS. THE COLOR IS EXACTLY AS ON THE ORIGINAL KODACHROME SLIDE. THREE OR FOUR YEARS AGO, I BOUGHT A CANON SCANNER ON WHICH I SCANNED OVER FOUR THOUSAND COLOR SLIDES, BUT IT IS BIG AND BULKY AND MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER. IT COST CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN THIS LITTLE SCANNER, BUT GAVE NO BETTER RESULTS. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS SCANNER TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PRESERVE PICTURES. See all 22 customer reviews...

By Kristy K Ott-Meyer The SVP Digital Film and Slide Scanner was very easy to use, basically you plug it in, put your negative into the slide tray and slide it through the scanner, and push the button. I used it to download old negatives (70's, 80's, and 90's) that my mother-in-law was going to throw out since she didn't know what else to do with them. There was a lot of history in those negatives so I decided for a gift to download all those negatives (about 1500) onto a SD Card that could be used in a digitial picture frame. It was fast and easy. This scanner was perfect for the job. I could then crop and brighten them on my computer. This is a nifty little machine that stores directly on a SD card - the 8mg SD Card was a nice bonus. The only drawback is only one type of negative can be used in the scanner - images from the old (I mean really old) type of negative wheel can't be scanned. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. money saving By jlkiss great product. good way to save old memories. Working like a charm! By Shalena Before buying a scanner for the hundreds of old slides my dad has around the house, I tried to do a lot of research. Certainly far from a pro, I knew the basics and not much more. It seemed like a lot of products out there got bad reviews for a lot of different reasons. Got this for his birthday. It came quickly, and was easily up and working in just a few minutes. Resolution and features worked great, and we had it hooked up to the TV showing off some old pictures in no time! So maybe it's not the best product if you're looking for a professional machine that will cost thousands of dollars - I really don't know. But instead of boxes of old slides, we now have discs and saved files of good quality older photographs and memories that won't be lost! I couldn't have asked for more so I am very happy with my choice. See all 9 customer reviews...

It is easy to use and seems to provide excellent results using the automatic features. There are custom settings if necessary. It is fast in scanning - 1-2 seconds per slide. It takes longer to load the slide/film trays than it does to scan. Extra trays can be purchased separately and are helpful. I have been able to amuse the family with picture of years past. The converter is a lot of fun to use. When I tried to have old 3 negatives printed I was told it would cost "about $95.00". Now I can print many for a great deal less! Someone came up with a great idea and I'm glad I found it .The only adjustment to the product would be is to make a slider for 110 negatives. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I don't really like the photo software that is included on the CD but the product works great with Adobe Photo Elements and I suspect would work with anyone's favorite photo editor. Reasonably fast and decent quality By Mr Smith With hundreds of slides reaching the age that the images were showing deterioration, I needed to scan them or let them fade away. I have tried a few other slide scanners and the process was so slow that I never managed to get more than 100 done. The VuPoint Solutions Digital Film and Slide Converter (FC-C520-VP-BX2) is fast enough and requires little enough attention to easily do 100 in an hour while watching TV. This scanner is easy to use. Put in SC card, plug in power, open it up, put some slides in the slide holder, push it in the slot and press the button. You load 3 slides at a time in the holder. The first time only you need to set the resolution (why would the default not be the higher one?) and the film type (BW/color/negative) - the settings persist. The image processing time is pretty quick; 3 seconds to adjust the light levels and you are ready to press the button. Scanning the image takes another 3 seconds. You get a 1 second display of the scanned image and saving to the SD card takes 5 seconds. One of the best things is it does not need to be connected to a computer - just insert an SD card and scan JPEGs to it. With other scanners I've used they had to be connected to your computer and you had to make adjustments for each image with some buggy application. This one is easy to setup and operate in front of the TV. The scanning is very automatic. I get good scans (the source is fading anyway so perfect is not a requirement) with no adjustments ... just load and press. One bug I have seen is some images show a blue-ish strip near the bottom of the image. Rescanning does not help. It can probably be corrected digitally. The slide tray is also a weakness. It has a tiny latch that requires a fingernail. Once you get the technique it works OK. 79 of 79 people found the following review helpful. Exceeded expectations By The computer lady With more than 2,000 slides sitting in boxes for 35 - 55 years, the idea of digitizing them was overwhelming. I had tried scanning them earlier with an HP scanner, but the quality was poor unless I increased the pixel count, and then it took 3-5 minutes to scan a slide. With the VuPoint, the process was so much easier and the actual scanning of each slide took less than 5 seconds. But, the best part was the quality, which was as good or better than with my HP scanner. As with both experiences, some slides need to be lightened. I've used my Adobe Photoshop software, so I can't speak for the software that comes with the VuPoint. We can now share memories of events, trips, special people with our family. For the price, the VuPoint has exceeded my expectations. 87 of 88 people found the following review helpful. Great Converter By Kenneth A. Bova This was great. The directions look a bit complicated. I inserted my slides and I was on my way. Use the SD disc, it is easer to work with it. I have 3200 slides which will eventually get put on a DVD. It comes with a tray that holds 3 slides at a time. I wish it would have come with a tray that holds 10, but that's only a slight disadvantage. If I had to do it agian, I'd purchase it. See all 35 customer reviews...

Campisi I waited to try all four features of this printer before reviewing it - document printing, scanning, photo printing, and photocopying. Generally, this printer is a beauty, both looks-wise and operationally. There is a pop up screen with a very bright menu that also displays photos. You are supposed to be able to edit them right there, but I didn't actually try that feature of this printer. The sleek, shiny, black rounded body has very cool back-lit buttons for all the functions right on the top. You can also control them from the computer. I found myself going back and forth between both, for both everyday functionality and the set up. I have to say a REALLY great feature about this printer, which I didn't expect to love as much as I do, is the wireless printing capability. You don't have to keep this printer anywhere near your computer, just an outlet. If you have a laptop and like to use it in front of the TV, you will absolutely love the freedom it provides. I would rate all of the individual features rate highly except the document printing. Here's my review of the features from best to relatively worst: 1. Photo printing - prints either directly from your card (no computer needed technically). You can print up to 600 dpi with this. The photos are crisp and clear, and color is accurate. The only thing I didn't like was the extremely rudimentary photo editing software. It is easy to use, yes, but it doesn't do much. If you want to retouch your photos, use either Photoshop or one of the free pieces of software. I like Picasa even. That may be simple, but it's better than this. Smaller printer paper loads from the back of the machine. Regular paper goes in a drawer in the front, which I really liked. 2. Photocopying - I find it's a relief to have a photocopier for the occasional document that needs photocopying. Here you'll have a color copier too. The colors also rendered accurately here. 3. Scanning - I tried a document and photos (you can scan your signature and then cut and paste it into letters, btw, which is a nice touch if you're sending out cover letters online). It did a great job on all kinds of documents, as well as my signature. Remember though that you can only print at 600 dpi with this machine, which may be a deal killer for a handful of people. The photo scanning wasn't quite up to the quality of the photo printing however. I scanned in a photo of my mom, and boosted the contrast slightly. The picture came out warmer and less detailed than the original photo. You can correct this on Photoshop, but in my opinion you shouldn't have to. Again, I was a little stymied by the fact that the photo editing software was so rudimentary - but if you have different software you should be able to work this out. 4. Document printing - this printer comes with two black cartridges - one is much larger than the other one and is just for printing. I have a small laser printer and am spoiled by it, so that is the caveat. First, the documents print out very slowly. It takes a while to prepare itself to print, and then when it does start to print, it's pretty slow. That was actually the only thing that disappointed me about this printer. The document quality is very good, but in my opinion doesn't reach the near-laser quality that some of the HP printers do. Considering this is an all-in-one, you can't kill it for that issue. However, because of that and the slowness I wouldn't recommend this printer to anyone who regularly does things like college term papers, or other things where you print out large documents on a regular basis -- the lack of speed would drive you crazy. I also liked my resume better on the laser printer, naturally. But the slowness and lack of laser-like crispness are what killed one of the stars on this rating. There was a cool thing about printing though - the front door

It works fast and the image quality is good. Some things to note: The batteries it came with were dead, leading me to believe intially that the product was faulty. But if this should happen to you, just pop in a fresh pair and you're good to go. Also, there is no internal memory for scanned items, so to do any scanning whatsoever, you need the SD card. Best get that along with purchasing the scanner. The scanner is perfect for the office or quickly capturing an image or two off a book page, however, although small and thin, don't expect it to get into those hard to reach corners of large books. Though designed to get to most places other scanners cannot, to truly scan an entire book, you'll need to separate the binding in which case you'll be just as well off with a flat bed scanner. But the scanner is still a good accessory for the student on the go. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend this product. 29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. 600DPI Colour & Mono HandyScan By Patty This is more than I had even hoped for. Love it to take to the library when doing research. It eliminates having to take notes as you can just scan and take home to put on your computer. It is a great time saving tool. 57 of 64 people found the following review helpful. It's a portable scanner... By SusieL Let me preface by saying this is my 4th scanner. Not the 4th scanner I've ever owned but rather the 4th scanner I have in operation. I would also add there's a bit of science when you're using this type of scanner (IE handheld you manually move over the document.) I have a scanner dedicated to slides/photos, one dedicated to multi page documents (IE credit card/bank/investment statements) & one to thermal receipts (IE grocery, drugstore, etc.) OTOH, this scanner will live in my tote bag & is for those items you do not anticipate. My 93 y/o mother lives in assisted living. There are times when she needs particular tests and I like scanning the paperwork before handing it over to the health care "professionals" but I don't have the luxury of going home & scanning it there. Also, since she's legally blind, there are things she wants me to look at & I like scanning it so I have a "copy" at home on my computer. (Very helpful when trying to help a legally blind person "over the phone.") See all 14 customer reviews...

Ion Digital Photo, Slide, ands Film Scanner By CJ from Philly I am using this product to convert my old slides (from travels) to digital images so that I can put them all on DVDs and get rid of my old carousels and slide projector.Ion Audio Photo, Slide, and Film Scanner (PICS2SD). The item comes with terrible directions, so be prepared to have difficulty figuring out how to use it. Then, the process is pretty easy, and fast to scan our slides. The conversion does often result in images with a purple cast. I put them in iphoto to make color corrections the best I can, and my slides don't look too bad! This does add a lot of extra time, though. Also, the machine is supposed to store up to 14 images, but after scanning one image, it said "full" and it wouldn't store any more. I was on the phone with Ion company and they couldn't figure out why I was having this problem, although, I noticed another reviewer had the same problem I could have returned it, but it works well with my SD card and so I kept it. If you are looking to convert your old slides, so that you can preserve memories, I would consider this machine, knowing it is not a perfect one. It will ultimately do the job for you and it is so much more convenient to pop a CD or DVD into the computer than set up slides. We can now enjoy looking at slides we haven't seen for 20 years!! 22 of 22 people found the following review helpful. No Bang for the buck By Mike The unit did not work well with photos. Scans did not look good. When the same photo was scanned with a 8 year old scanner the difference was very noticeable. The Ion scanner scanned in 5M and the scanner scanned in 300dpi. File (JEPG) sizes were 1.05 mb Ion scanner and 1/2mb Acer scanner. I would have to believe it is the ion scanner itself with its LED light that is the scan quality issue that I have had Several observation points: 1. Scan Quality is an issue in my opinion with this scanner. 2. Scan quality/file size is another issue. 3. Internal memory holds only 3-4 photos far short of what the manual states. 4. Transfer to the computer via usb is ok but needs to be more direct without having to use a usb to computer dump menu option. A software option solution would work far better, as I would assume most will be using a computer with this unit. For the cost of the unit I would expect that. 5. The Ion unit needs a solution for handling photo sizes out of the norm. If the photo is slightly larger than the holder it will not fit. If it is smaller removal from the unit is problematic. Maybe an adjustable holder for odd sizes. This unit is not worth the money in the present way it works. As a potential time saver in scanning it has that potential but at present I would look for another solution 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Super great... By Janet L. Smith I was very pleased with this item....if your slides are good quality the transfers will be in good quality...very fast and easy...didn't really need to read the instructions...don't know why others had a hard time...just put a few in and work with the buttons a little and you will catch on quick...I did at least 700 slides that were over 20 years old....didn't take long at all, even let 8 year old granddaughter help...after the holidays I plan on doing my many boxes of negatives, did a test on some black and white negs they turned out great...Love this machine, plan on sharing long lost family pics during Thanksgiving !!! By gk I purchased this excellent scanner after much frustration with two previous purchases which failed to perform: Canon CanoScan 4200F and the HP Scanjet 4890. The biggest problem with scanners is not the hardware, but the software. In the case of the CanoScan 4200F (and similar 8400 and 9950 models, which use the same software), the driver utterly fails to crop slides correctly: in the default 'auto-crop' mode, it cuts off parts of the frame but when 'auto-crop' is disabled, it fails to scan slides separately, forcing you to crop each one manually. What is worse, is that the driver does not remember your settings so you have to reconfigure every detail again, every time you scan. There are many other bugs in this driver too. The Epson 4490, in contrast, is very sensible about cropping - it allows you to manually adjust cropping, if you like, or to disable it and simply scan each slide as a separate file, capturing the entire frame This would seem simple enough since both the Canon and Epson scanners employ plastic slide holders to fix the position of the slides in relation to the scanner so the Epson software always knows how to reliably split multiple slides without cropping, whereas the Canon software simply gives up. Another area where scanner software often fails is in the installation. The Epson installation procedure worked perfectly and did not even require a reboot to begin scanning. The HP 4890 installation was a complete disaster: the giant 'easy install' poster included with the scanner contradicted the installer on when to plug in the scanner: instructions explicitly said to connect the scanner prior to installing the driver, but when I actually ran the installer, it failed to connect and Windows failed to ever recognize the new hardware, even though the installer reported that I could connect the scanner later - which was not true Even after uninstalling and re-installing and rebooting the HP driver (which took about 40 minutes), although the the scanner appeared to be recognized by Windows and was 'connected', the driver would simply hang forever when attempting to scan. I recount this detail about the HP scanner because it is positioned very close to the Epson 4490 in terms of price and features, yet is completely unusable. In this regard, another important consideration is technical support: in the case of HP, phone support is strongly discouraged and hard to find - even if you do manage to find the phone numbers, the quality of HP support staff is abysmal, in my experience Epson, in contrast, publishes the tech support phone numbers prominently on the instructions included with the scanner. Perhaps, Epson can more easily afford to divulge these phone numbers since products that work well require very little tech support. This made me feel quite confident with the Epson product. Now the big payoff - scanning! The quality of images you get is directly related to the ease of use in configuring the scanning software. Although the Epson software is not perfect, it is quite usable and powerful. It does a reasonable job of retaining configuration settings and the advanced features of 'dust removal' and 'digital ICE' image correction is very impressive. The flaws in the software include the following. 1. The ability to 'save' settings is spotty: you cannot assign a name to saved settings; saved settings only configure half of the parameters, prior to preview - you cannot configure use of 'dust removal', 'digital ICE' etc but must manually assign these options on each scan 2. The prefix used in assigning filenames to scanned images does not allow the valid windows filename character, '.' 3. 'Target size' parameter cannot be saved. Workaround is to use the image 'Resolution' parameter instead (resolution=2400 can be saved and is equivalent to resolution=300, target size=800%, for.
