Bivins This scanner performs well for the user who expects very good scans from flatbed and negatives/transparencies at this price point. PROS: Costs under $200. Scans negatives and transparencies--35mm, mounted slides, and 120. Includes very easy-to-use-and-integrate software. Installs easily (on WinXP SP2). Makes scans that are very usable in Photoshop CS. Is able to make scans that I don't need to mess with (for web, email) without using Photoshop. CONS: 35mm holder allows filmstrip to buckle. Minor software tweaks would be desirable. No good way to store film holders when one of them is in use. I'm an amateur photographer who develops his own film. I had been getting my film developed by an excellent, and inexpensive, local chain that also provided a CD-ROM of scanned images for each roll processed. Once I started developing my own b/w film, I wanted a scanner that could do decent scans so that I could continue to keep medium-resolution "contact sheets" on my PC. I thought that the 4180 might do the trick at a pretty inexpensive price point. I was right. It scans well, within timeframes that are reasonable. I've read other reviews here, and I'm not sure what everyone expects of their scanners--but given your connection (USB 2.0, etc.) and whatever else you have going on, I think you'll find this scanner performs as expected. It takes a while to do medium-to-hi-res scans, but that's what I expect of a scanner. I expect it to transmit to my PC pretty darn quick, but the scanning part can take its time. The scanner software does not always detect the framelines between 35mm frames correctly. I think this might be what another reviewer was referring to regarding black lines. Usually, re-previewing the set of frames corrects this. Worst case scenario, you just preview and scan the whole set of frames and then go back and scan that problematic one individually. It's really not a big deal. If you're intending to scan a great deal of 35mm negatives, slides, or 120 transparencies/negatives quickly, then this is not the right scanner for you. The provided film holders don't hold a lot of frames. I do appreciate being able to scan 12 35mm negatives simultaneously, but when you're dealing with rolls of 24-36, it does take some time. Luckily you don't have to be present during most of the scanning process. The 35mm frame is very good at holding the film, but because it isn't a sandwich of glass, it does not hold your film flat if it's not flat already. Artifacts in the resulting scan are common, especially at the ends of 35mm strips. The software should have a way of overriding the "selection" of frames by the software. Usually it's accurate, but when it's not I'd rather not have to redo a single scan because the software selected a too-narrow area or one that overlaps two frames. The enclosed software is very good. It includes a densitometer, editable histogram, and other tools for working with your scans. I have not worked much with the grain removal and dust/scratch removal tools, but I'm more comfortable working with those problems in Photoshop. For excellent thumbnails and fast, very good printable scans, I've found this scanner to be excellent. 89 of 94 people found the following review helpful. Raises the bar for budget photo scanners By Just a photog It's hard to believe that the first flatbed I bought back in 1997 only had 300dpi optical, no transparency function at all and cost $300. Times do change. I have only had my 4180 for a few days but so far the perfromance is quite impressive. Flatbed scans of photographs and documents are nice and crisp. I haven't done any negative scans but I did load in some of my favorite Kodachromes and the results were quite good. Scanning transparencies at 3200dpi gave excellent results in prints up into the 8X10 range. I suspect that you could crank this thing up to the point where you

Rump I purchased the Nikon 9000ED scanner mostly because I could not find anything else that would scann my 2.75 x 2.75 slides. There may be other products out there but the recommendations I got was to go with the Nikon. Basically I inherited a case of these slides which feature my family from roughly 1960 to 1979. Most of the slides are badly faded, underexposed or otherwise not usable. So I figured in order to save the memories I need to spend the money to do it right. I am not disappointed. Initially I kept getting a mysterious error in the post-processing cycle. After many emails back in forth with 3rd level support staff at Nikon (nice to be able to get support) we figured out that I was setting something called digital GEM on when that wasn't necessary. The process works on badly grained film which I didn't have. Once I changed the default scan settings by not asking for GEM corrections, all has gone beautiful for me. The red-brown slides magically come back to me with their original colors via the digital ROC process. I'm not too technical on all the things that happen within the hardware-software process but the results an amateur like me can get are simply awsome. I scan the slides at a full 4000 bpi and store the results as huge TIFF files. I figure that disk space is cheap but at least I have the original in a best possible digitized format. The slides will continue to deteriorate but not the digiatl data. Fred Rump 56 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Pretty Good. By Buffy If I could update my rating it would be 4 stars (instead of 5). 1/9/06 Original review: This was incredibly easy to set up and overall the scans are sharp and the color is nice. The Digital Ice 4 included with this scanner does a tremendous job with removing scratches, dust speckles, etc. It's too bad Digital Ice isn't offered with more scanners--it's really a key selling point for this brand. One problem I am having is with a horizontal shadow at the top of each frame. This seems consistent no matter which negative I am scanning. I am currently investigating and trying to contact Nikon about this. If this very faint shadow were not there---this would have been a perfect scanner. I will update when this issue is resolved one way or another. 5/25/05 Update 1/9/06: the shadowing effect described above seems to happen primarily with high contrast images shot on negative film. Most images shot on transparency do not have the shadow problem Update: 1/9/06: I learned through usage and contacting Nikin support that you must turn Digital ICE off when scanning black and white negatives (meaning you'll have to manually clean up those images yourself). Too bad, because the ICE does a tremendous job in removing dust speckles. Update 1/9/06: my scanner had a problem where it wouldn't eject the 35mm tray, it had become stuck in the unit. I had to take it back to a Nikon support office about 45 min from where I live. They seem to have fixed the problem as it has been working fine since then (that was about 2 months ago). Fortunately, this happened while the unit was still within warranty. Nikon support did not give me any hassles when I took the scanner in for repair. For the most part this works very well. I have had some problems (the shadowing, the tray becoming stuck) which I don't expect for an (approx) 2K piece of equipment. In lieu of something better from another manufacturer, this seems like the best piece of equipment if you need to scan in film negatives or transparancies to get high quality scans. 40 of 40 people found the following review helpful. For medium format negatives, easily better than my local pro lab By Neurasthenic I was astonished at what this scanner could do, in terms of preserving the gentle tones of my black and white negatives. My only regret is that there is no equivalent to Digital ICE for black and

Most Excellent By A Customer After reading other folks' reviews on scanners and seeing all the problems they had with cheap ones, I decided to spend a bit more for something better. It was a good decision: the CanoScan D1250U2F has exceeded my expectations.Software and hardware installation was straight forward, and the documentation is clear and simple. An important factor in my decision to buy the Canon was its inclusion of Adobe Photoshop Elements -- it is very intuitive software, powerful, and it interfaces well with the scanner.Color rendition is excellent, and scanned photos appear well-balanced and clean. On my computer (running Windows XP, 1.8GHz, 384MB RAM) scanning at moderate resolutions is reasonably quick and downloads are prompt, even though I'm running with the USB 1.1 driver and not 2.0. Scanning a 3x5 photo at 600DPI takes about 15-20 seconds, maybe 10-15 seconds at 300DPI. A lot of that time is the scanner "adjusting the lamp" before the actual scan. The film and slide scanning apparatus is easy to use and produces passable results. The images can be contrasty and the colors somewhat subdued, but in this price range I don't expect professional slide scanning. At 2400DPI it makes an image fairly close to the resolution of the film and is certainly good enough for most email-the-photo and web publishing applications. The scanner also comes with optical character recognition (OCR) software, which works, although I did not find it intuitive. Also, the OCR software makes some bizarre decisions, especially concerning spelling correction, and seems eager to take control of the scanner, initiating scans at unexpected times. Aside from the puzzling OCR software, if I wanted to be nit-picky I'd say the lid hinges are a bit flimsy, and the buttons on the front of the scanner are pointless. In my opinion it would be a better product if they removed the buttons from the front and put a power switch on the back. But that's all just nits... The scanner does a great job overall. 95 of 99 people found the following review helpful. EXCELLENT. By Chas Devlin So far, it works wonderfully. I'd read a millon reviews of other scanners -- Agfa, Umax, HP, Microtek etc., but after a while it all evens out. I couldn't afford the next level in 'professional' models and really didn't require all the gizmos that accompany them. So the Canon was my final choice. Using Windows ME, it set up in less than 10 minutes. Hardware was found easily and there was no driver problem. I was scanning immediately. Up until this point I was using a friends scanner on Windows 98. A heavy model, 4 or 5 years old (clunky parallel/serial port etc.) and it was incredibly slow, and loud. This was such a difference. I only tested a color photo (5 x 7) at 200% (dpi) and it did it in just under 30 seconds. I also tried a large color drawing from a book and it was surprisingly good. I'm sure the real test will be images at much higher res (but who really needs them that big?). Plus I've yet to try grayscale or scan from magazines/newspapers. Using the 'descreen' option worked exceptionally well. It completely removed the moiree pattern from an album cover. Very surprised that it did it so well.I'm also using it with an Adaptec USB 2.0 card. It's certainly fast. I haven't done really high-res stuff yet, but I'm sure it'll be better than what I'm used to. The software is fine although I haven't used its archival/Photo record stuff. It seems aimed at beginners and may be useful. If you already have Photoshop 5 or 6, you probably won't need Photoshop Elements that comes with it.While there are obviously better scanners out there with more gizmos and larger scan areas (at a higher price of course), I've no complaints. It seems ideal for my home/office use and is intended to scan family photos, vinyl album covers and wide array of other materials. It comes with a slide tray that, also

Caine In interests of full disclosure, I was only interested in using the scanner to scan family slides, and I returned the scanner after one week. On the positive side, installation was a breeze in Windows XP. Epson includes a high-speed USB 2.0 cable, which was a nice extra, as most companies skimp here. I was also intrigued by the "touch up old faded photos" software. I have had great experiences with Epson scanners before: in the past I have found Epson scanners to be among the fastest and most accurate, and they have, in the past, included the best OCR software free. I was disappointed that this scanner included ABBYY's OCR software, which is inferior to the OCR software Epson included with last year's scanners. (See CNET's reviews of OCR software.)After hooking up, I scanned a photo using the included software and automatic settings. The scan went well. I was a little surprised that the automatic settings default to 300 dpi scanning (whether for photos or slides), but higher settings produce images so large in (initially uncompressed) megabytes as to slow down my relatively new Dell computer with 128 meg RAM. Scanning the photo went quickly.Things did not go as well with the slide scanning. While the software is quite easy to manage, whether in automatic or manual settings, a few annoyances interfere with what could otherwise be quite a successful suite. First off, the scanning software uses overlapping windows for such (simultaneous) windows as the preview window, the scanned pictures window, and the manual settings window, but none of these have separate tabs or "buttons" in the Windows XP taskbar, so it is difficult to move each out of the way to find the other ones. I'm unsure how they even accomplished this, as I've never used a program in XP that didn't produce a button on the taskbar corresponding to an open window. At first this was an annoyance, but after three days, it was crazy infuriating, as it makes it difficult not only to deal with the scanner windows themselves which keep hiding each other, but it also makes very cumbersome to multitask with any other programs. When the scanner is scanning, its software window sometimes will not hide, and then when you do hide it, you can't bring it to the fore again without minimizing the other programs' windows, or it will bring to the fore the wrong window. How Epson can commission an expertly performing software application, but have it without corresponding window-tabs, is typical of today's rush-to-the-market user-unfriendly software. I suppose it doesn't matter when scanning the occasional piece, but it certainly ain't fun when you're scanning the family photo album. But the final straw was that after hours of scanning various slides at different resolutions, I could not produce a scan that was not SLIGHTLY blurry. Since some of my slides were taken by professional photographers and look crystal clear on the wall, I scuttled my project and returned the scanner. Why spend a week converting the family slides for permanent sharing and archiving, and getting a blurry scan? I have read that this is a common problem with inexpensive scanners: I suspect that if you take the slide out of its white cardboard frame, so it can lay perfectly flat, they might be in focus, but I don't want to ruin my slides. Seems to me that if they can put an autofocus mechanism in extremely cheap cameras, they could have figured out a way to autofocus the slides in this slide-scanning scanner. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Granderson First I would like to say that all of you who are buying this scanner as your first are spoiled rotten! My last scanner was purchased about four years ago and served me well. Still works but I decided to upgrade becuase it's quality isn't up to par with my needs anymore. THough it was long ago, I still vividly recall the three days it took to get it, the scsi card, and the drivers all working happily together. This scanner on the other hand had a step by step guide that had me up and running in only two minutes, no joke, didn't even have to reboot. The quality is great. The color balance is excellant, incredibly sharp, and no artifacts or saw edges of any kind. The saturation seemed a little low at defualt so I tinkered with the settings some to get it where wanted.Another big bonus is the film scanner. I've seen other scanners that seem to have rough "quick and dirty" adapters and so forth but this scanner is truly optimized for the purpose. It has a light built into the lid, instead of a mirror system, to ensure balanced light. The image from negative scans is a little soft, I assume that this is cuased by the slight bends in the film. Its not hardly noticable unless studied side by side with a print. The startling aspect is the color. It is extremly vivid. I was rather shocked when I looked at some picures of a past vacation. The perfect color brought back realism that was lacking from the print which was color balanced by a lab technician.I'm looking forward to using the film scanning function for professional purposes but I would also like to point out that is is a very handy feature even for just home use. I'm sure that some of you are like me, with boxes of negatives in the closet and prints scattered to the far ends of the earth. Instead of paying expessive lab fees for all 10,000 of them to processed, I can just browse through them, scanning the ones that look ineteresting and emailing some to buddies. 27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Piece of Cake By A Customer I bought this scanner because of its low price and features. What I really wanted was a good basic level slide/negative scanning capability at the lowest cost, and this scanner fits the bill well. Nothing could be easier than setting up this scanner--took all of 10 minutes (from opening the box to plugging it all in to loading software to actually scanning an image). Operation is very simple--put photo on platen, push button, follow on-screen prompts. I've found the software packages very useful. Those looking for batch slide scanning will find no such capability here, and if you have a stack of negatives to go through, plan on taking some time. However, you can't beat the capability of this scanner for the money. Also, tracking my purchase through Amazon.com was excellent--all the info you could want about where in the pipeline your purchase is at any given moment. They said 5-7 days, it arrived in 3. Great Job. 37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, Excellent scanner. By STEPHEN J. SMITH This scanner was a replacement for my Mustek 1200 that I had recently bought and was dissatisfied with the quality of output. The Canon D660U, though not as fast as the Epson Expression 636 I use at work, has better output quality. This scanner is PERFECT for my home and business needs. The ability to scan 35mm slides and negatives is an added plus. Although I still use Adobe Photoshop to edit all my graphics, the software that comes with the D660U is every bit as good. The included Ceare Omnipage OCR software is top notch. This is an easy to use, high quality scanner package that everyone should be happy with. See all 22 customer reviews...

UPS delivered the unit to me without issue, and a day earlier than Amazon anticipated. Unbox and setup proceeded smoothly and almost without incident on both my MacBook Pro and my wife's Dell Inspiron E1705 (although it ran **very** slowly on the Dell). At first, the PC Setup Wizard wouldn't find the printer. I found C7180's MAC address and had it find the printer manually. True to form, the printer set-up on the Mac was quick and easy. I was initially worried that printing wireless to the C7180 would be slow, laborious and error-prone. Not so. From both the Dell and the Mac, I noticed little difference between USB and 802.11g printing modes. The first few prints on the provided 4x6 HP Advanced Photo paper were a little off, both Mac and PC. Black and white prints were flawless, although drying times were longer than I'm used to from my previous HP Photosmart 7520. Looks as if the nozzles needed some cleaning (not uncommon with a new Photo printer), as a single cleaning cycle fixed issue with colour prints. Normal fast prints to regular paper from Word and Excel (both Mac and PC) were very sharp. Not quite laser quality, but very legible at 5 points. When trying to print from iPhoto to 4x6 paper, I'm having to use the Advanced print option to choose the print tray, otherwise the photo prints to normal paper. Maybe that could be considered an "Advanced" setting, but that's not something I had to do with the old Photosmart 7520. I haven't done much scanning, but I'm please with what I have done so far (some slides). For some reason, the light bar on the scanner **never turns off** and I plan to call HP about it tomorrow. The last thing I need is for that light bar to burn out. Additionally, the 3.5" screen is always lit up. Could be a function of being on a wireless network - the screen gives you feedback on the strength of the wireless signal and whether or not you are receiving messages or shared photos via HPs photosharing service. So far, I'm impressed. I love the ability to print wirelessly from...well, whereever I want to be. I'm sure my mother-in-law will love the internet photosharing function. I'm docking a single star for the light bar and color screen remaining on for hours at a time. edit - Duh. An option in the printer setup will allow you to shut off the scanner lamp if unused for an hour. Still no solution for the printer LCD remaining backlit. 46 of 47 people found the following review helpful. Excellent quality and lots of great features By J. Smith I bought this printer to replace a hp psc 2100. The automated 4 by 6 picture paper tray is great, no having to take the letter paper out and worrying about getting the picture paper lined up correctly. The printer also is 802.11g wireless, I have the printer connected to my home pc with the usb cable, and I have setup my laptop with the wireless, and it works very well. I printed pictures and documents off of my laptop and the quality was great. the c7180 also is bluetooth ready, I have it paired with my cell phone and have printed pictures that I took with it. I tried out the negative processing on the printer. It takes about a minute to convert the printer over and get the film loaded in the special tray. It took about 5 minutes for the printer to scan and process the 5 pictures that was on the negative. I had a friend come over with a memory card, we put the card in the printers built in card reader, then viewed, edited, and printed the pictures without even turning my computer on. The included photosmart software is ok, it is not the easiest to use and does not have a ton of features but if you are just doing basic editing then it will be just fine. I have not tried the fax, since I already had a fax machine. The price may seem a little steep but with all of the features

Dust, Dust, Dust By JoeSchmoe With all the hype about the image quality of Epson scanners, I was disappointed by the lack of quality that came from the one I just got. In short, there's dust under the glass, inside the scanner where it's unreachable, that I can see with the visible eye, and that is magnified in scanned images. Image quality would be excellent except there's dust specks all over the place on the images. Since consumers have complained of a similar dust problem with previous Epson scanners, I thought the company would fix it with this new model, but they didn't. In fact, quality control doesn't seem to have improved--there's even a fingerprint on the underside of the glass. I'm returning this one and getting a Cannon or HP instead. 35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. A little disappointed By L. Manstrom I've enjoyed the superb quality of my Epson printers & wanted to give them a try for my next scanner. For the price, you can't beat the quality of the scan or the fact that it includes a 35mm film adapter. But I do have a couple of issues that are serious enough for me to write about.1) Dust. There was enough dust under the glass on the first unit I received to warrant exchanging it. Now that I have the 2nd unit, there is still dust (Epson quality control is lacking), but not as much. It is not at all noticable when scanning at 72dpi (for uploading to the web), but is *very* noticable on-screen when scanning at 300dpi or greater for printing. Fortunately, it is barely noticable when printed. I've not yet decided if this is enough for me to send it back again.2) The Smart Panel software interface pops up randomly, and it's VERY annoying. Even if I haven't scanned anything since booting up, it will just open for no reason. Closing it does no good, it will open again. Minimizing it does no good, it will keep refreshing. Epson referred me to their 3rd party software vendor, NewSoft, where I found the following in their FAQ:"ESP2-0013 Why the Smart Panel interface will pop up randomly? The problem was due to the scanner driver detect the wrong hardware code to launch Smart Panel. Our development team are working on the issue. Please visit NewSoft website for further release notice, if there's any new Patch to cover this issue."Great, no end in sight. If not for these two significant bugs that should be easily remedied with a little Quality Control, it would be an unbelievably wonderful unit for the price. 32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Good Performance for the Money By A Customer I've always preferred Epson scanners. At work we used the top of the line, so when I needed a home unit, I thought this would fill the bill. So far, I've been very happy with it. It's lighter weight and slower than the professional models I've used, but it also cost less! Set up was a snap and it worked from the get-go. I'm happy with the performance and quality of scans; all the scans I've made thus far are very good. The slide scan adapter also works well; too cumbersome to convert a tray's worth of slides quickly, but the quality is suprisingly good. The software is fine, but I've switched to the manual TWAIN mode and scan everything into Photoshop. This one's a keeper--After living with it for a while, I've upped my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Is okay By Michael King I have all these old slides and negatives that I've been meaning to convert for several years now. I finally caved and bought this scanner so I could at least get them on my computer. It does an okay job. It is not archival quality. It scans quickly and easily, you can adjust the exposure and a few other things in the unit. I never intended to print anything out, and it's fine for just converting the memories to digital. It's a little fiddly to use - the slide carrier only takes 3 slides at a time and I find it a little difficult to fit them snugly into the carrier. I haven't used the negative carrier yet, but it looks like it takes a full strip of negs. I thought I would be able to plug it into my mac and upload the scans as they were scanned, but no. I have to plug the scanner into the wall socket, scan the images to an SD card then transfer them. It seems a little temperamental too - sometimes it won't turn on so I'll unplug it from the wall once or twice, close the lid and open it and eventually it will switch on. All in all, does an okay job. A little fiddly. Probably a bit too pricey for what it is. I would not buy it again, that's for sure. See all 1 customer reviews...

Works, mostly By Mark Huth Having read the horror stories about the previous slide feeder (SF-200), it was with some trepidation that I purchased this for the LS5000ED. I have thousands of slides to scan, and feeding them one at a time doesn't seem like an option. I was pleased to find that the first batch of Kodak cardboard mounts went through without a hitch. These were some Kodachromes from the early 70s, normally exposed. The scanner took the stack of 40 without a problem and completed the scans. However, my good luck didn't really continue. About every third stack manages to jam, normally just after I watch the first 3 slides go through without a hitch and I leave for my real job. This slide feeder is just plain poorly designed. The feed path is designed such that each slide must pass under the stack, giving the possibility of catching the edges of the window in the mount above. Additionally, for some reason, the slide gate adjustment, which adjusts for the thickness of the mount, wants to move a bit on it's own. Failure to re-adjust after stack has caused a couple of jams, where the gate moved off of vertical and closed the opening too far. These problems all occurred with rather uniform stacks of slide in good to excellent condition. I've had no problems with Gepe plastic mounts for slides I've mounted myself, but that is normally only a small fraction of slides that people need to scan. One solution to the jamming seems to be to use a shim to put the feed follower pressure on the outside of the slide stack. This fans the stack a bit on the inside, which has allowed a balky stack to feed okay. Be careful how you engineer this, however, as if the shim gets caught in the feed mechanism you'll have another set of problems getting the feeder back to normal. An additional failure I have had once was for the autofocus to go totally wrong. It managed to scan an entire stack of slides badly mis-focused. I put the single slide adapter in and the slides focused and scanned fine. I put the feeder back, only to find the problem persisted. I was about to pack it off to Nikon, when I power cycled the whole thing and found that correct operation had been restored. The error handling on the batch scanning is broken, with the software thinking that scans have been completed which haven't. This is just a nuisance, resulting in the wrong file number part of the saved files if you don't catch it when you restart the scan. However, my software does detect that the slide didn't feed, and just shuts down, requiring exiting and restarting the scanner software to resume. And then there is the general issue of software stability. On Windows 2000 with the SP4+ stuff, I cannot use USB 2.0 (scanner software looses communications with the scanner, and restarting the software leads to a blue screen of death). I also have to restart the software after each roll of film (approximately) or the application crashes. I'm going to try XP one of these days and see if it's any better. Hard to say if it's Nikon or MS that is screwing this up. Probably a joint effort. Update: now running on a fast machine with XP Pro SP2, USB2.0 - after solving the XP ROC-GEM problem, I can report that the software is reasonably stable, typically going several rolls or sets of slides without crashing. There are no system crashes under XP, just application faults. Slide scans take around a minute to 90 seconds each in the stack feeded. One drawback of the slide feeder over the film strip batch scanner is that there is no way to do different scan settings for the slides in the stack. With film strips you can tweak the settings for each frame, but there is no preview capability in the batch scan from the slide feeder. This is an oversight that they could correct in the software. However, the feeder reverses the slide order, so you would have to restack the slides between the preview pass and the

Most helpful customer reviews 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. nice product but could be improved By Jay I hope the designer of this product will read my review here, and make it better, because it could be a truly very useful tool. I really think to some people this little tool can be very helpful. It's light, easy to carry, and works very well. One thing I really want it changed is the distance from the side edge of the scanner to the line where the scan area starts. This won't be a problem if you just need to scan a piece of paper laying on the table. But once you try to scan a page in a book/thick magazine, you immediately feel the pain, because the scan area can not cover the whole page. As you can imagine, when you hold the scanner and move it from top to the bottom of the page in a book, you can't move the scanner too much to the left to let the scanning area cover the whole page, because the most you can do is to touch the edge of the scanner to the middle of the book. As a result, the scanned image often does not cover the 2 sides of the page. This is extremely painful, and almost make it unusable. I tried to scan from left to right (instead of from top to bottom), but it has its own problems (like you will need to rotate the image, and rotate different way depending odd page or even page). This is obviously a design flaw. If the product testers have tried to scan book, they will immediately see the problem. The attached software ABBYY Screenshot Reader does not work on my Windows 7 edition (there is no instructions saying which version of OS the software supports). I have it installed anyway, but then found it cannot be opened. The annoying thing is the computer keeps asking if I should allow ABBYY to access internet. If it cannot even be opened, why does it try to access internet. To download trojans? See all 1 customer reviews...

I worked for 3 hours to install. Never scanned one slide. My computer will not recognize the scanner. I did tons of update, mess up my display settings and caused new errors. I consider myself a seasoned computer user. I would not recomend this, It is not even close to plug and play. Thank goodnes for windows restore function on my computer. :( 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Poor and frustrating product By W. Ellis I received this item as a Christmas present and it is a complete waste of time. Installation was a nightmare on both Windows 7 and Vista. Could not load the software or drivers correctly. No driver or download support from the manufacturer. During my search I found many postings looking for the same support I was in search of. After 4 attempts on each computer it finally would recognize the hardware only to lock up after every save of scanned images. The scan quality is only fair and the images are hot with washed out areas generally faces. I have yet to scan more than 6 slides without a lockup and at times rescans to save the images. The frustration is not worth the effort. Save your money, shop around and steer clear of this product. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Needs a redesign By Teddy_Mak It took me three tries to get the driver installed, but the unit worked properly after that. The color and resolution are just OK. Another issue is the feed mechanism. You must align your negative(s) perfectly with several slots and tabs, which is almost impossible without touching the photos themselves. The unit should have had a reel type mechanism to feed the film into. I received this film converter for FREE using bonus points, which makes it a good value. The retail price is way to high. Move on to something else. See all 3 customer reviews...

Larson I wanted a scanner that would scan any size film negative and paper too, but did not want to to pay a million bucks for it-This is the one! I know an antique dealer who gets these glass negatives from sales and estates and I have been able to place 4 of them on the pull-out drawer and scan them with great results. I have also scanned some old negatives from film cameras from the 1920s and 30s. The scanner has a large platten (legal size) for doing paper and a drawer like platten that pulls out from the bottom for doing slides and negatives. There are several inserts that will accept the different types of media. I have found that the 8x10 glass drawer is the most versitile and easiest to use. The i900 comes with 2 different software packages for both Mac and Windows; Scan Wizard Pro, and Silverfast, professional scan software. I installed both of them but so far have found it easy enough to stick with just the first one. It has a very intuitive interface and I have had no problems at all. The "Digital Ice" technology is interesting and effective but it is slow- I have found it just as easy to do a regular scan and repair the photo myself in photoshop. The only thing that might count against this thing is it's size- It's big. And it's heavy. It's dimensions are 15"x22"x6" and it weighs 30 lbs. So if a small footprint is something you have to have, forget this baby. Installation was a snap- my Mac just loves my new scanner- and so do I. I'm real glad I bought it. 26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Great scanner, but not the greatest... By J. Lockard I loved this scanner, to a point. I shoot a mixture of 35mm and medium format film. This scanner looked like the ideal solution, it didn't cost nearly as much as a dedicated medium format film scanner, it allowed me to do glassless scanning of negatives and still allowed me to scan 35mm, other transparancy sizes *and* documents. All was well and good till I checked out the medium format film scanning tray. It has 4 places to load my medium format negatives, unfortunately, these are only big enough for a maximum of 1 6x6cm negative each. For negatives I don't know any photographers that cut their negs into individuals, they usually keep them in strips of several negatives. Well, if you're using the i900 you are going to have to cut your negatives out of their strips. Also note, this tray isn't really a "medium format" tray as a generic term, it's really a 6x6cm only tray for 120/220/620 film. If you shoot 6x4.5cm you might be able to make due, but you simply won't be able to scan your 6x7, 6x9 or 6x17 film with this scanner. Microtek support tells me that have no intention of make a good medium format tray for this scanner, so... I sold mine on one of those huge auction sites. I'm thinking of using the money from my auction to buy a Mictotek i800 scanner which will do 6x17cm negatives, which means it will allow scanning of strips of medium format film. I need to make sure that will be enough. If you will only be scanning documents, 35mm negatives, 35mm slides or 4x5in. film, this scanner was a beautiful system and I would have kept mine if only it dealt with medium format film. 71 of 79 people found the following review helpful. Spectacular Product! By Sandra Waldie I've been waiting for this scanner for months and months but it has been worth the wait. I had it on pre-order and have finally got the opportunity to get it. I was eyeing the Microtek 6800 for quite some time but decided to hold out for a legal sized scanner that also had positive and negative capabilities. I was also impressed with the price point of $599 MSRP. I was expecting it to push $799 or more based on the speculated features but was pleasantly surprised when the vendor told me. With that being said I received the scanner yesterday and immediately torn into it. I am impressed with

Love Visioneer products By DMG Over the years I have a number of visioneer scanners and I like the PaperPort software they come with. Combine that with the mail in rebate and this was a great deal. Scanner works very well and the Paperport software can scan directly to .pdf files as well as other formats. It just works well, and it works with Windows 7 too. 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. PC Only Scanner By J. Gibson I normally do really in-depth research before buying any product but totally missed it this time. This scanner is strictly for PC's and isn't compatible with Apple computers. I almost returned the scanner once I realized this fact but since I have a PC at present, I decided to keep it until I purchase a Mac computer in the coming year. Only the great sale price I received made this a viable option. For the price I paid, this is a decent scanner. I had a very old HP that quit working so I needed something quickly and the price was right for this scanner. I've only had it for a very short time and have not used it much because of the holidays. If I find other pros or cons, I'll update this review. Pros - set up was simple (I have Windows XP). The PaperPort software is very good once I got the hang of using it. The scans are good for what I need (scanning photos and artwork). I've always used PhotoStitch software for combining photo scans but really like the stitching software that came with this scanner - it does a good job and is easier to use than PhotoStitch. I didn't install any other software from the CD so can't comment on anything other than PaperPort and the ArcSoft Scan and Stitch Deluxe. Cons - It's only for PC's, not Mac computers. USB and power cords are shorter than I really needed. "Hole" for scanning negatives is a pain when not scanning a full sheet but scan can be cropped to remove it. (I currently have a piece of paper over the cut-out which also works.) It's pretty noisy when scanning. I don't think I would pay full price for this scanner but for what I did pay ($59 plus shipping and tax), it was a very good value. I might have rated it higher except for not being able to use with an Apple computer which is my main complaint against it. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Excellent scanner for price By Geob Donte 1st this unit is light weight, love the feel and design. I needed a good quality scanner without paying top dollar. After reading other reviews I'm not upset to say the least. The scan isn't super fast, but scans in seconds and at least there isn't any warm up time. So far had to adjust reds on one scan and brightest on the other, fairly easy with the bundled software. Also could not manipulate cropping from the touch buttons, maybe within a month I will figure out. Cropping is very easy from within the bundled software. After setting up the unit to scan slides it took me about 20-30 minutes to realize I had to restart the computer. The scanned image from the slide came out excellent. I can't believe I almost purchased a more expensive unit. I highly recommend this unit! Purchased on mega sale for under $70. See all 30 customer reviews...

By JanSobieski First of all, let me say I am a neophyte when it comes to scanning. My mother passed away recently and I wanted to go through my father's 20,000 slides and scan the best ones before they, as many before them, disappeared into the hands of one of my 7 other siblings never to be found again. After culling my father's slides I ended up with about 1000 I wanted to scan. After culling my own slides I ended up with another 250 slides. Additionally, I had about 250 slides from my grandfather slides And after that I decided to go through my color negative collection and scan the best of those as well. A daunting project! But honestly well worth the effort. Most of my father's slides are Kodachrome. Much has been written about the inability of this scanner to scan Kodachrome slides and said about ICE4 not working with Kodachrome. Well, I have some good news The ICE4 does work extremely well for the most part. However, with Kodachrome slides it does produce minor artifacts in about 5 percent of the slides. I scanned with ICE (not ICE4) always on and then rescanned if I encountered unacceptable artifacts. I did notice that the scanner ICE feature was more likely to be stumped by old Kodachrome slides where subjects were wearing shirts with stripes. The GEM ROC and DEE (the other stalwarts of the ICE4 other than ICE itself) work on Kodachrome slides as well, but I found that the results were unpredictable and that I could achieve better results myself in Photoshop far more quickly. The GEM ROC and DEE features simply took too long and slowed down the scanning unacceptably. The results, for me, were not worth the additional scanning time. So I never used these features. But the "enhance" feature on the scanner I used nearly 100% of the time with great results - much better than the GEM ROC and DEE features. The scanner is fast and does produce wonderful wonderful detailed scans, easily demonstrating the grain in the transparancies at 3000 and 4000 dpi. The Kodachrome slides were a challenge to the Dynamic Range of the scanner, but I believe that most of the detail in the shadows that is there was extracted. With dark slides I used the VERY useful gain feature turning it all the way up to 2 in the really dark slides. Unfortunately, Kodachrome, with all of its many attributes, does have substantial downsides including a very narrow exposure latitude and shadow detail is simply lacking. I think the scanner accurately reproduced the information including the colors on the Kodachrome slides, with perhaps a slight bluish cast noticed in some cases. It wasn't until I was finished scanning all of the culled slides that I undertook to scan my select color negatives. And this scanner really came into its own scanning color negatives. Don't even TRY to scan color negatives without ICE because the results are unbelievably bad. Even pristine negatives have scratches and dust that magically are erased by the ICE feature. What a godsend. The scanned color negatives were just beautiful with very accurate color rendition. But immediately I noticed much more grain in the color negatives (Royal Gold and Fuji Superia Gold) than in the scanned slides. One note unrelated to the scanner itself. Until you've used a digital scanner to scan your color negatives you can't begin to realize how far superior Kodachrome, Provia, and Ektachrome slides are to color negatives insofar as capturing detail. Even the best color negatives have much more grain that Kodachrome. And the difference in color negatives is substantial too. The included Nikon software worked fantastic for me. I downloaded a copy of VueScan which according to many reviews is superior to the Nikon software and found that for me the Nikon software was easier to work with and produced superior results. The software did cause my computer to crash occasionally

Great alternative to more expensive Coolscan 5000 By JanSobieski The Coolscan V is an excellent cheaper alternative to the Coolscan 5000 which I have also owned. One star is overrating this thing By Bernie Spencer Customer support [is bad]; the drivers and software that I bought in March 2003 had a 1996-1998 copyright date; and worst of all, scans get progressively darker. A scanner that can't handle exposure settings! it's OK until it runs thru it's 'calibration' routine, then it's the beginning of the end. I went thru two different units, they both were terrible. 53 of 57 people found the following review helpful. WORST computer peripheral I ever bought! By David Hodgson Before buying this scanner, I'd had some of my 35mm transparencies professionally scanned, which produced great results but was an expensive approach. I bought this scanner in the hope that it would allow me to produce reasonable-quality scans at a lower price. Unfortunately, although the software worked fine for me, the quality of the scans is so hideously bad that I gave up in disgust after a few scans. Here are some of the problems: 1) strong pink tint to every scan. Although this can be corrected to some extent in software, there is a significant loss of color spectrum that cannot be restored. 2) Poor dynamic range: rendering of shadow detail is nonexistent. The most astonishing thing is that I bought my unit several years ago, and they're still selling this piece of junk now! 34 of 35 people found the following review helpful. There must be a better scanner available at a modest price. By A Customer I have purchased two PF1800U's over the past 18 months, because it seemed the only option in my price range and I need quality slide scans (flat bed scanners definitely not an option). Both units had lamp failure, the second one after only a couple dozen slides. "Customer service" is hardly an option; difficult to impossible to reach via their website and not terribly helpful over the phone. I had to locate my receipt and register the product by fax before I was allowed to ask any questions, and I still didn't get any answers. Needless to say this was terribly disappointing. On the good side, the scan quality is quite good, though the process is very slow and you may have to close down most open programs to get it to work. Interfaces well with Photoshop.Would I buy one again? While the new version with the ICE software is quite tempting, I'd have to say no. I'm looking for another, more reputable brand. Maybe a Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual III. About a hundred bucks more, but if it doesn't break down it will be well worth the extra money. See all 30 customer reviews...

Terrific performer for about $100 By 35-year Technology Consumer I purchased this to replace an older HP scanner that was a good performer,...but wanted to take advantage of the higher data transfer speed of a USB 2 capable computer.I'm frankly surprised by all the large number of low grades other users have given this machine. It has handled all the following scanning functions easily and with consistenly high quality output:-Scanning photos to digital files (.tiff, .jpg and other bitmap formats);-Reprinting photos directly to a photo printer;-Importing printed materials directly into MS Office documents and Adobe Acrobat documents;-Direct output of a scanned text document to a printer;-Scanning negatives to digital files for editing/printing.Minor...but not serious flaws:-Other reviewers are correct: it only does 2 35mm negatives/slides at once (but scanners with an auto feed capacity are going to cost 2x-3x as much.-Two of the 4 front panel buttons are directly related to marginally useful HP-specific functions ("HP Share-to-Web" and "HP Memories Disk"; their apparent presumption is that we don't know how to FTP or author CDs;--This model is among the loudest home scanners I've heard.-The bundled software isn't outstanding, but it's certainly functional (especially if you take some time to customize the settings). For $..., the digital and hardcopy image/text outputs are highly resolved and crisp 36 of 39 people found the following review helpful. What's all the Fuss?? By IcartM I recently purchased this item from a local electronics store for a really good price (open box items are my best friend). In less than 15 minutes, I was able to scan twenty-one 8.5" x 11" pieces of artwork created by my students. Using the software provided by HP, I also took the items that were created in the landcape mode and rotated them. I renamed them, copied them into a file and also created a photo album. I then printed out the photo album, 15 images per page. OK...so it was able to scan very well. I then decided to test its ability to scan negatives and print them out. I took a negative that was about 8 years old. Scanned it and then opened it in windows viewer. I printed one slide out as as an 8" x 10" print, and another as a 5" x 7". I printed them out on a laser printer using 600 x 600 dpi. Both printed out very well. If you want to make money using the scanner, you might want to invest in something more sophisticated. However, it works just fine for the basic user in a home environment. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. pretty good scanner By Rosomax For the price of $70-100 there are about 6-7 scanners. I picked HP for a simple reason -- proven durability. We have a couple of HP scanners at work and they've been used heavily for the past 3 years with zero problems. I've talked to many people who had Epsons and they all had problems of various kinds. For the good: It scannes the old pictures very well. I come from a very "old" family and we have lots of pictures from 1800's. They turned out very good and easy to restore with editing software like the photoshop. For the not-so-good: The software is a bit "clunky". Seems like it has too many tools that do the same job. A simple all-in-one program would have been just fine. For the strange: Where's the power switch? You will need to physically unplug it if you'd like to save a couple of KWatts. One star taken off for that. Otherwise a solid product that does the job. See all 44 customer reviews...
