Botkin I own one of these--bought it used in 2004--and have had nothing but success in transferring images from film to digital. Initially, I used it only on a Mac G3 as that was what the Minolta software supported. It worked fine on the G3 as most of the image processing is done in the scanner. Recently, I tried VueScan [...] and found that not only was the scanner supported, it worked like a new puppy on my iMac with Snow Leopard! OK, I used a Ratoc SCSI to firewire box Ratoc Systems FR1SX FireWire to Ultra SCSI Converter (IEEE1394), but other than that it was a simple setup. Hardware vendors have every right to discontinue support for product software and drivers needed to support operating systems introduced many years after the hardware was discontinued. In the land of innovation, this creates an opportunity for software developers to provide solutions at a reasonable price. 5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Won't get fooled again. By John Harrison The Dimage model I have is a bit earlier than this one, but I thought you'd like to know about Minolta's driver update practices. For my Dimage scanner, Minolta chooses not to update the driver from XP to Vista, effectively tuning my scanner into an $800 brick. Thanks for nothin fellas. 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 120mm? By Celeste Rojas Mugica hello. Sorry for my bad english. This scanner, works for 120mm too? Thanks, Celeste. Awesome scanner once you get the issues worked out By Bebe Deimos I agree that I did have some problems with paper jams in the ADF. But then I noticed that it seemed to mostly happen with smaller width paper (11" long, but less than 8.5" wide) and legal size documents when trying to duplex. Well, then I read the manual (duh!) and it clearly states that the scanner is not set up to duplex legal size documents or unusual sized paper. So I thought that was a problem. But I am trying to scan all my documents into electronic form and so the scanner is only part of the solution -- electronic document management software is the other part. I got PaperPort Professional 10, set it up with the ISIS driver (the TWAIN driver is not so good) using the PaperPort scanner setup utility running all scanner tests -- and it started working perfectly! The key with legal and odd size documents is not to duplex! Scan one side with the ADF then turn the documents over, put them back in the feeder and let PaperPort do the collation. It works GREAT! This is EXACTLY the solution I have been looking for since I started scanning in all my paper documents about 5 years and many failed hardware/software solutions ago. I am using none of the software that came with the scanner, just downloaded the latest drivers directly from the HP website. The only issue I have noticed (which could explain why some people think the ADF is "broken") is that when a jam occurs (which hasn't happened since I started doing things using my new procedure) is that the ADF gets into a wierd state where it thinks that there is no paper in it even though there paper there. The fix: unplug/plug in (not turn off) the scanner and let it reinitialize. There are rollers in the ADF which get stuck in the down position during a jam that don't ever seem to reset unless you power cycle it (and you can't really turn off the scanner with the power switch -- it just puts it into standby mode). 36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. $700 and still not ready for prime time By psgenius If you are looking for a reliable scanner with a duplex automatic document feeder, save your money and sanity and keep looking. The included software is inflexible (global setting for duplex is either on, or off, you can't select the duplex setting without going through 5 menus and 8 clicks to turn duplex scanning on and off) Save the hair thats left on your head by avoiding this scanner and the included automatic document feeder jammer. Not only are the paper jams frequent (on the type of stuff you would regularly scan, I'm talking about bank statements that come right out of the post mail - not tissue paper) but a paper jam can actually destroy your documents if they get stuck mid-scan. There is no easy release button or pull. Pull tightly, and hope that the bottom advice piece of your phone bill does not take up permanent residence in the duplex bay of your scanner. A software update will not fix the paper jam feature, so just look elsewhere. HP, if you are reading, allow the user to select duplex or non-duplex for each scan. 29 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't completely work with Acrobat By David Kieras I got this to help me scan paper documents to save as pdfs to de-paper my office. Except for some difficulties clearing the rare paper jams, it seems to be fine mechanically. I would be satisfied except I haven't been able to make it play nice with Acrobat v. 7 for Windows XP SP2. The HP-supplied software will produce pdfs, but of generally poor quality compared to what the scanner can do driven from Acrobat. The problem is trying to get a scan of both sides of the paper from the ADF. The recommended TWAIN driver (the "Document" TWAIN) that comes with it simply won't do this from Acrobat, but it works fine for single-sided scans. Using the other TWAIN driver will scan both sides, but it

Most helpful customer reviews 36 of 41 people found the following review helpful. BEWARE OF THIS BRAND By A Customer I'VE TRIED THIS UNIT WITH FAIR/POOR RESULTS. ALL OF PACIFIC IMAGE SCANERS I'VE TRIED TEND TO OVER EXPOSE OR REQUIRE A PHOTO EDITING PROGRAM TO "CORRECT COLOR". I CURRENTLY HAVE THEIR 1800U MODEL. IT'S GOING BACK! (P.S. I SEE LARGE QUANTITYS OF THEIR SCANNERS BEING RETURNED DAILY.) ALL SCANS COME OUT ROSE OR BLUE HUED AND/OR THE COLORS ARE BLOWN OUT. I.E. NO BLUE SKIES OR WHITE WALLS. I DO ALOT OF MILITARY SHOWS AND EXPECT RICH COLORS NOT A PINK & BABY BLUE FLAG. THE 1800U CANNOT HANDLE DEEP SHADOWS IN B&W FILM. THEY TEND TO SCAN A MURKY GRAY COLOR. IT SEEMS LIKE THE LIGHT IS NOT OF QUALITY OR CALIBRATED PROPERLY. I SPENT A WEEK TWEAKING THE GAMMA, CONTRAST, BRIGHTNESS ETC. BUT STILL DO NOT GET CONSISTENT SCANS. YOU HAVE TO ADJUST FOR EVERY SCAN MADE. I'VE TRIED TO CONTACT THEM BUT THEY'RE NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. I THOUGHT SINCE I WORK IN THE BLDG. NEXT TO THEM I COULD EXCHANGE MY UNIT BUT I CAN'T "WALK IN" TO DO IT. EVEN THOUGH I "WALKED IN" TO PURCHASE IT. WHEN YOU CALL FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL YOU GET IS A ANSWERING MACHINE. 44 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Excellent piece of equipment By AGupta The scanner is just the size of a book only a bit thicker. Very simple USB connection. The software install was a breeze. Will certify that it works perfectly on a Windows XP machine with a lot of other devices and software.Scanning results were very good at 1800 x 1800. created a 25 MB file. Scanning is very fast. In 5 minutes of unpacking I had it working. only issue I had was that I had to push the film into the autoloader a bit firmly. The auto loader works just as good, the best part is no guides to load a film onto. Would like to indicate that I did shop a lot, after evaluation found that It is probably easier to connect USB than a SCSI type Scanner (open a computer, put a card, then the SCSI issues! Believe me it is not all that cool! I service and maintain computers as a profession, I know). Also would like to recommend the 1800 resolution over 2800 resolution . Higher resolution is fine for professionals but for home users like us, who need to scan and digitize all the film at home and have CD or DVD picture albums, 1800 is more than enough. Infact an 1800 scanner is equivalent to a 4 Mega Pixel picture taken by a digital camera, So you can even print 4" prints from your photo printer or from Ofoto or any other online service. Finally but not the least it has an asthetic look. In all a very good buy. 23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. beginner By A Customer It could have been blind faith, however I was disappointed that I couldn't get past the software. Mac user By Video game player This mouse was great for the price and the only negative i have is that the scroll button kind of squeaks when you use it. The mouse is awesome because it is one of the only white ones and the other ones by mac are much more. This mouse is also very sensitive, so you might find your self turning down the sensitivity on your settings. Pros. Matches the MAC and smooth. Cons. Scoll button squeaks and you will have to turn down the responce sensitivity. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Optical Corded Mouse By Wicker The mouse is just what I expected it to be and works like it should. I like the fact that it "isn't" wireless. I had one of those and prefer the corded mouse. It is excellent. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Mouse By James Corley The mouse is good for what it is. The graphics on the shell are silver-colored not black and the middle-click is loud but the mouse looks nice, works accurately and is inexpensive. See all 11 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 100 of 103 people found the following review helpful. Has it all By Ronald K. Goodenow Though I'm a scanning veteran, having worked my way through a few generations of SCSI and USB devices, I must admit to being mightily impressed by the 2580 and at least parts of its software package. If a tad clumsy to use at times, the bundle offers an option to do some color correction of faded prints as they are scanned, and another nice one to easily scan multiple images at once, properly setting up separate files for each. One can choose default, home or professional settings to fine tune scans. Like most scanners in this price range the 2580 has buttons on its front which provide for instant scanning, e-mailing, etc. The proof is in the pudding and I must say results are just fine. Although I've yet to try the film strip reader, results with old 35mm slides were easily equal, if not superior, to a far more expensive Olympus slide scanner I bought a couple of years ago. A couple of old 2x3' prints turned into beautiful 8x10's, and so on. The USB 2.0 connection is very fast (once the scanner warms up), and despite its features the scanner's footprint is pleasantly small. Now for some precautionary information. The Epson's twain driver apparently doesn't like competing with those left over from previous scanners, particularly Canons. So if, after following directions to install the scanner very carefully (you MUST install the driver software with the 2580 disconnected) it does not fire up when called from the Epson supplied apps, or any other scanning ones you have, be sure to fully uninstall other scanner drivers and be sure to kill the older scanner in device manager as well. My main computers run Win98SE and I've yet to see what would happen were I to use it with my XP laptop which has portable scanner software on it. But keep my findings in mind and save yourself a call to customer service. As for the application software's usability, the included ArcSoft program provides basic editing as well as a neat set of projects (make your own calendars, etc.) but serious users will want to scan into Photoshop or another more feature-laden program. The 2580 works well with both a Paperport program I've used for years (and has many good features) and Photoshop Elements, my editor of choice. There is no printed manual or even a big pdf one. This said, the html-based help feature is easy to use and, in terms of software and general setup issues, quite good. Finally, I had to call Epson support for some help on the driver issue, my initial concern being I had a hardware problem. Direct telephone help is a long distance charge, but I must say my call went through to a real live person almost instantly, and her support was friendly and fast. And, no, Epson has not outsourced its help desk to the other side of the world. It's right in the middle of America, in Colorado. All in all a fine product. 56 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Good but could be better By A. Johnson I bought this scanner to scan in my old negatives. This scanner will do that with no cropping required, although it is a bit of a skill to get each strip to load properly at first. I do however have a problem with this scanner, and that is that is isn't as good as it should be in aligning the negative frames with its scans. The the process of scanning is itself quite tedious as it takes about a minute per frame (yes frame, not strip, and more if you want better quality), but to be expected. However, I find some of my scans come with black edges where the alignment is just not quite right. Is this the end of the world? No, but it is annoying to have to rescan perhaps several times to get the image to occupy the full frame with none of the border also captured. This is supposed to be all automatic and to spare users from having manually to align negative strips in little plastic holders, and it does that - but the process isn't as automatic

Grosh My former scanner by Microtek was difficult to set up and did not work until I searched for hours in the documentation and on Microtek's web site and finally found a rather complicated answer. I still have to apply the "fix" to any computer I use the Microtek scanner with. In contrast, the Epson Perfection 1200 USB Scanner was a breeze to set up. I just plugged the USB cable in with my computer already on, turned the scanner on and Windows 98 detected the scanner and the "Add Driver" wizard came up. Just point that to your CD drive to load the drivers and that's it.The scanner is very fast and quiet. The twain interface is as good or better then any I've seen. The quality of the scans is top-notch across the board, from color to contrast to shadow depth.I choose this scanner based on a ZdNet review of Epson's 636 USB scanner which won their editors choice award. They said it works especially well with Epson Color printers which I found to be the case too. With a hardware resolution 1200 x 2400 dpi, the Epson Perfection 1200 USB scanner has higher optical resolution than any other scanner in it's price range. It's a real bargain.Tips: Whatever graphics program you use, set up an ICM color profile. Or use the ICM profile of your monitor. Adobe Photoshop comes with a utility to do this. Then in the twain interface of your scanner click the "Use ICM" check box. Then your scans will look more like the originals when viewed on-screen. If you have an Epson printer (I have the Stylus Color 740), when you print choose the "Epson Stylus Color 740" profile from the "color space" list. If you have another printer it should show up in the list too. This info is for printing from Photoshop, but other graphics programs should be similar.Scans printed from my Epson printer look almost identical to the original including color tone and depth.I use this scanner primarily for professional web design and personal photograph reproduction.Overall it's just a great scanner and I'm very happy with it. 81 of 82 people found the following review helpful. Windows 2000 drivers actually work, scanner a beauty! By John W. Anderson I needed a scanner that worked in Windows 2000, and decided to take a chance - based on other reviews posted here - with the Epson Perfection 1200U. The short of it is, the scanner worked right out of the box. Setup was easy, the Windows 2000 drivers I downloaded from Epson's web site installed without a glitch, and the software bundled with the scanner can't be beat. I was especially delight to find included the Presto PageManager, which is a kind of ACDSee thumbnail browser (with myriad other functions), and with it's Presto!Wrapper utility, which saves your image in a self-executing file to send to friends who might not have imaging software. Very cool. The scanner is also the fastest I've owned, and the Twain software for scanning is multi-configurable for auto-sizing, exposing, et al of your image. Very very nice. I'm very very pleased with this scanner, especially after I had bought an Acer 620U on the sole basis of its supposedly being Windows 2000 ready - only to find (to my horror and frustration) that the drivers for the Acer were bug-ridden and conflicted with my USB Iomega Zip Drive. I also had a Mustek 600II-CD, but had to give it the boot when Mustek said they weren't planning on supporting Windows 2000. So you can imagine my delight when the Epson Perfection 1200U not only worked right off the bat, but proved to be an unbeatlable value for the money considering the superior bundled software (Presto! PageManager, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Broderbund Print Shop Press Writer, and ArcSoft's PhotoPrinter). Further, the scanner is fast, quiet, the quality of the image output is excellent, and there are other features I haven't even begun to explore. Easy and simple

Canon CanoScan LiDE 50 Color Scanner

Brand: Canon Model: 7876A003AA Dimensions: 1.50" h x 10.16" w x 14.72" l, 3.97 pounds Up to 1,200 x 2,400 dpi resolution, 48-bit color Z-Lid expansion top for bulky originals Complete software bundle, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 USB 2.0 interface and power supply, cable included PC and Mac compatible; 1-year warranty with Instant Exchange

One of the slimmest scanners on the market, the Canon LiDE 50 measures less than two inches high and includes a desktop stand for nearly invisible vertical storage. This doesn't mean it can't handle your originals--thanks to the Z-lid design, the LiDE 50 can accommodate items up to an inch thick while keeping them totally flat for absolutely impeccable scans. 48-bit color and a 16-bit grayscale provide rich tones and clear contrasts; the 1,200 x 2,400 optical resolution (9,600 x 9,600 dpi interpolated) handles the rest with clean, crisp detail. USB 2.0 interface means there's a single cord that supplies both power and connection, as well as a speedy transfer of data. Bundled with the scanner is an impressive array of software for both Windows and Macintosh OS systems that will allow you to convert, smooth, and organize your images in a variety of ways. Perfect for home use, the Canon LiDE 50 is backed by a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service. What's in the Box Canon LiDE 50 scanner; stand; power/USB 2.0 cable; instructions; setup poster; warranty information; Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 CD-ROM; CanoScan Setup CD-ROM with ScanGear CS (Windows/Mac), CanoScan Toolbox (Windows/Mac), Arcsoft PhotoStudio (Windows/Mac), ArcSoft PhotoBase (Windows/Mac), ScanSoft OmniPage SE OCR (Windows/Mac), NewSoft Presto! PageManager (Windows) and NewSoft Presto! BizCard (30-day trial version, Windows only) Enjoy high style and performance to match. The sleek CanoScan LiDE 50 Color Image Scanner is great to look at. Which is fortunate, because with its amazing performance and versatility this scanner will earn a prominent place on your desktop. The LiDE 50 scanner is loaded with everything you need for fast, high-quality scans and maximum convenience. The USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection enables you to scan large images much faster than USB 1.1. Color reproduction is outstanding with up to 1,200 x 2,400 dpi and up to 48-bit color processing for over 281 million possible colors. Four external buttons--copy, scan, e-mail, and file enable true single touch convenience for each function--and allow easy sharing of images with any audience. For multiple images, "Multi-Scan" mode automatically scans all the photos in one pass. The LiDE 50 scanner even includes a powerful suite of applications featuring Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. Features: 1 cable for USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and power 4 easy buttons: copy, scan, e-mail and file at the touch of a button Z-Lid expansion top Up to 1,200 x 2,400 dpi resolution 48-bit for over 281 trillion possible colors Enjoy elegant design. The LiDE 50 scanner may be slim, but it can tackle the big jobs. The exclusive Z-Lid expansion top lifts up to 1-inch high and stays flat for scanning books and magazines. Other scanner covers lift only at an angle--not lying flat for thick items, resulting in poor scans. Unique to the CanoScan LiDE scanner series is the single cable connection for both power and data transfer--no bulky AC adapter required. A handy scanner stand allows "on-edge" convenient use or storage.

Gerber I read the great reviews here (and elsewhere) on the LiDE 30, prompting me to buy the newer, faster 50. I have USB 2.0 ports and wanted the better performance ? and wasn't disappointed! The 50 can scan a full 8.5x11 color image in less than 30 seconds at 300dpi, including several seconds for the scan mechanism to reposition itself afterward. The optional "preview" was so fast it wasn't worth timing. My guess is 5 seconds or so for the above preview.I won't rehash all the nice features of this scanner since many of you have read the LiDE 30 reviews. It seems to be an LiDE 30 with impressive USB 2.0 Hi-Speed performance added. It's also capable of generating 48bit color output and 16bit monochrome output, whereas the liDE 30 is half that, not that this is really important. 24bit is 16 million colors and 281 trillion colors is something I don't relate to.Aside from speed, I was pleased with the space saving design and attractive "stainless steel" appearance. The scanner bed has sufficiently high edges to allow me to easily position a sheet of paper in proper alignment, without it trying to climb over the edge. A lot of human engineering went into this product!Windows XP really loves this machine. The software installed without the slightest hiccup. This scanner is as hot-pluggable as any device could be. XP recognizes its presence and absence immediately. Even though the LiDE series requires no power source other than from the USB port (boy do I enjoy the absence of another power brick!), I prefer to remove power from the scanner when it's not in use and it's a snap to pull the cable from the front USB port. (If you're curious, the LiDE requires 498mA against the standard USB output of 500mA. Probably 10% or less of the current draw of CCD technology scanners.)The package comes with some impressive looking software but all I wanted to do was scan images from PaintShop Pro and Adobe Acrobat and enjoy convenience copying. There is appx. 500MB of software if you load everything but I only installed the XP Driver and the CanoScan Toolbox. I did this not because I didn't want the other software, but really to see if the scanner would be fully functional without it (including the 4 "one-touch" buttons).I was glad to discover that the CanoScan Toolbox has everything that's required to Copy, Scan to a program (PaintShop Pro?), Scan to email, and Scan to a file (including a PDF file). You may like some of the other programs they offer if you want to try your hand at OCR, manage photo albums, and similar tasks. I did install the Adobe Photoshop Essentials 2.0 because I respect Adobe software and wanted to see what this entry level image editing program can do. Not counting the 95MB for Photo Essentials, the driver and Toolbox took only around 30MB or less out of the potential 500MB.The CanoScan Toolbox is very functional, impressive software. It allows you to setup 7 discrete type of scans with their unique resolutions, scan method (color, grayscale, etc.), paper size, your printer, specify your pet image editing program, etc. Then, you can associate your choice of 4 of these 7 functions with any of the 4 physical buttons at the front of the scanner. Canon has preset reasonable defaults. There are a couple negatives to be aware of. CIS technology, as has been reported by some LiDE 30 users, is sensitive to the item scanned hugging the glass. This is quite true and even a thin pamphlet will produce a distorted scan, especially at page edges and corners where there's curl. The solution is to press the lid down to flatten the page against the glass. Consider this if you do a lot of scanning from magazines and books.Another negative is my mild disappointment with the automated scan functions and single button functions --- a bit overrated in my opinion. Scanning to a program or file creates a JPG file

Previously relied upon either a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 or drum scans. The 4870 produces gorgeous scans and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my purchase. SilverFast has proved to be a dissapointment for use with B&W negs. I would probably have purchased the regular 4870 vs. Pro version if I had it to do over again. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfull By Jose Hidalgo Yes, it's really wonderfull for restoring very old B/W negative films. I am using it with negative films that are 60 or 70 years old and the result is incredible 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Just Buy It; You'll Love It! By Elisha Granger I finally have my perfect duo for scanning and editing. I am a "peripheral junkie" and have found a dream come true in this scanner. Yes, you will pay more but you will not be disappointed. I buy scanners at least yearly, but I won't do this in 2005 because I have found a wonderful product. Scanning is super fast. Digital Ice really does make a difference. The organization of your scans is intuitive and easy. You can scan and make edits prior to the scan. I prefer to make my edits in Photoshop Elements #3. When I have used the Digital Ice work flow, I have made significant edits on very old photos from my ancestors' 3rd World cameras with fabulous results. "Digital Ice" is a significant component of this program which makes it worth the price. I haven't researched it recently, but this was the only scanner in December that bundled this component. Most helpful customer reviews 51 of 53 people found the following review helpful. Awful By Wilcy Moore I've never been so frustrated by a piece of equipment in my life. I had an older HP scanner that died after scanning thousands of documents, so I naturally looked to upgrade to a newer HP model. This thing is terrible. It worked fine for about a week, but then I started getting errors in the scans. Soon after that the scanner began freezing up regularly and then it ceased to work altogether. I went to the HP web site looking for a patch, and what do you know? A lot of people have been having the same trouble and they had a software patch that would supposedly fix the problem. Unfortunately the patch doesn't help. At this point, the scanner works about 1 in every 10 tries. It usually freezes up, which then requires a total reboot of Windows. I've managed to get 3 things scanned this morning in about 30 minutes. This scanner is headed for the garbage if a new patch isn't available soon. Update: I have now downloaded SIX PATCHES from HP's web site and the scanner appears to be working. Obviously it is the software that is incompatible with the combination of Windows XP and various other imaging programs I have loaded on my computer (HP warns about this). I have software for Canon and Fuji digital cameras, so they may be the culprit. In any case, I still wouldn't recommend this scanner given the compatibility issues that come with it. 2nd Update: It is now two months since I posted my original review and I definitely stand by it. I continue to have problems making this thing work right. It's so frustrating whenever I want to scan a document to keep an electronic record of something and I have to shut down my computer or start and stop the scanner. I can usually make it work, but it is NEVER simple and ALWAYS time consuming. Another Update: Today has been pretty typical of what it's like to try and use this awful scanner. I had six documents to scan. The first three scanned fine. The scanner locked up on the 4th one. Had to reboot and start over (it erased the first 3 scans). This time I scanned 3 documents, stopped and saved everything, then went to my other 3 documents. Now it locked up on the 2nd document. Keep in mind, when it locks up, you can't cancel the job. You have to reboot and start over. By the way, the error message I got told me to reinstall the software yet again. I'm wondering how many of the patches are included in the latest version of the software because I seem to add at least one patch every week. Final Update: The scanner was destroyed by office workers angry that it failed to perform even the simplest of tasks. Rumor has it that it was thrown from a 3rd floor balcony and then run over repeatedly with a delivery truck. In any case, this was the worst piece of electronic equipment I have seen in 20 years. We connected it to state-of-the-art computers and it was remarkably awful on a very consistent basis. Sorry HP, you're not what you used to be. Canon anyone? 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Design Defect in Make Copy Mode. By J. Parker The make copy button on the front of the scanner and in the software does not work properly. In my case it makes copies only in draft mode. After getting the runaround from tech support, and even exchanging the scanner for a new one, tech support admitted to me that "make copy" doesn't work. In some cases it prints nothing, in others it just prints in draft. The gave me a "workaround." Scan it as a picture, then tell it to go directly to the printer. But then the copies don't look like the originals. What really makes me made is that they must have known this all the time, and they just wasted my time and tried to wear me down. I'm returning mine and buying another brand. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Multiple failures By Michael J. Dietz I have approximately 10,000 slides to scan. I purchased the 4850 and after about 3,000 slides

I'm very impressed with the quality of the scans, the colors are acurate and the detail is excellent as well. I also tried the negative adapter and it worked great. The software that comes with the scanner is the best part. You can put a photo in the middle of the scanner, press the scan button on the scanner and it determines the orientation correctly (even if the photo is not perfectly straight). It's as close to "unattended" as you can get; you just have to swap the photos. I use it in combination with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and use the "batch processing" feature to name and save all the scanned photos at once. This job would be unmanageble on my old scanner, a CanoScan 620U. I did have a problem with the first unit I bought being defective. I left it plugged in overnight and it was dead in the morning. I was happy enough with the results and low price to buy another one. 39 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Good scanner, but not for film. By M. L. This scanner was excellent for scanning pictures and images, but did poorly with 35mm negatives. The color was dull and had a brown tint to it. In comparison to the Canon Lide80, the film scan was terrible. This is a GREAT scanner if you do not wish to scan film. 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Good for light use By T. Milke For a $100 scanner, I didn't expect high quality scans. What I did get out of it was a lot better than I expected. Most of the detail in photographs and documents came out pretty good. Hey, it does photos, slides, negatives, and works great with my Mac. That sold me right there. Not everything is perfect though. When using the text "interpreter", it has a tendency to turn blemishes (fold lines, scratches) on the paper, into strange text, and unreadable ascii characters. It's not too much of a pain, as it's usually pretty easy to clean up with a text editor. When doing negatives, it does not reliably scan all the images on the negative. I've had to scan some several times to get the image that I wanted. This thing is also slow. We're talking slooow here. I haven't used that many scanners, but all the ones I've used have been lightning fast compared to this one. It took 3 and a half minutes just to do a simple document copy (scanner straight to printer). There are times when a document or photo won't scan completely (the edges are cut off). I can solve this problem most of the time, by putting a colored sheet of paper behind whatever I'm scanning, and edit that part out in photoshop. On the bright side, I've never had a problem doing slides. I can put three or four photos on the glass, and the scanner will turn them into seperate documents for each. Orientation doesn't matter either, just use the built in software to reorient the picture. (yes, it works on Macs too). If you're just starting out, and need something inexpensive, for light work, this will satisfy your needs. If you are going to do a lot of scanning, then you'll probably want something speedier. This isn't the greatest thing in the world, but it satisfies my needs. See all 16 customer reviews...

More than capable of meeting your basic scanning needs By Daniel Jolley I was recently given the task of selecting a flatbed scanner for public use in an academic setting. We didn't need anything fancy - just a good flatbed scanner with which patrons can scan photos and text documents. The main criteria I focused on were reliability, cost, OCR capabilities, and easy of use. Since I will be supporting any patrons with questions or problems using this scanner, I wanted a unit that would be as simple as possible to use. The designated PC has sufficient but not an extraordinary amount of memory, so I didn't want to go for extremely high resolution capabilities, either. After looking long and hard at a variety of choices from leading producers, I chose the HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart Scanner. Truth be told, it really wasn't that hard of a decision in the end. The HP Scanjet 4070 seemed to have everything I was looking for as well as some additional capabilities we don't really need but which could possibly be of use in the future. This sassy little convertible features a Photo Door which allows for the rapid scanning of 4 x 6 photos as well as the scanning of 35 mm slides and negatives. More importantly, it seemed to offer some of the most impressive OCR capabilities among the flatbed scanner candidates I was evaluating. Happily, the unit has lived up to its promises so far, doing a wonderful job of scanning text into an editable format with its Integrated I.R.I.S. Readiris OCR software - errors have been few and far between in this regard. No OCR software is perfect, but this does seem to do one whale of a job. The optical resolution of this scanner is 2400 dpi, and the color is 48-bit; these settings meet our needs quite well. Our scanner's intended purpose does not involve high resolution scanning and advanced photo editing. The HP Image Zone software provides more than enough photo editing capabilities for us, such as the ability to remove red-eye problems automatically and easily breathe visual life into old, faded photographs. Unless you're doing some serious graphics design, Image Zone should have everything you need. The HP Scanjet 4070 also comes with ArcSoft Collage Creator software. We don't have any real need for this particular program, but it's a nice extra and can be fun to play with. This scanner is pretty darn simple to use, I'm happy to say. The HP Director software provides an easy-to-use interface to all scanning options, and the front button panel on the scanner itself allows for basically one-touch access to the most common functions. The only way this scanner could be simpler to use would be for those buttons to actually spell out Scan Photo, Scan Document, etc. As it is, though, the icons on the front button panel are essentially self-explanatory. I can't really comment on the scanning quality of slides and negatives, since that is a capability we have no use for at this time, but the HP Scanjet 4070 does a wonderful job scanning photos and, as I have mentioned, a very impressive job of scanning documents into editable text. Finally, this scanner could hardly be simpler to set up and install. USB makes everything easy. Install the software, hook up everything on the scanner, then plug the scanner into an available USB port on your PC, and you're ready to rock and roll. I personally had no trouble installing the included software, and I tested everything on my own Dell PC with Windows XP Pro before setting the scanner up at its permanent home connected to a HP PC running Windows 2000. If you're looking for a flatbed scanner to do basic scanning of photos and text, I think you would be wise to include this particular model in your list of candidates. 41 of 42 people found the following review helpful. The first scan I did matched the original exactly (as far as I could tell). It was easy to set-up and quick to scan. I really like the transparency adapter that comes with it. If you use large format slides or negatives, this scans 5" by 5" which really comes in handy. Not to mention the bundled software, you get a really good package. I recommend this for anyone who needs to scan images for catalogs, newletters, web pages, etc. 33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. An Improved Scanning Experience By Bob Glaser I recently purchased a new computer with this scanner as part of the package. I had fought with scanners before and was generally dissapointed with the results. After a couple of months with this product I have become much more comfortable with with with scanning, either graphics or documents. The support program is excellent. You are able scan directly into the appropriate program. While the negative and transparentcy takes some getting used to, it works efficently. Scans are crisp and have plenty of definition. I have worked the with the the scanner in both Photoshop 4.0 and WordPerfect 8 with excellent results. I work with documents for a living and graphics for a hobby and look forward to many hours of enjoyment with this piece of hardware. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. good product, easy installation but takes lots of disk space By Kyle Jones Installation of this scanner was a breeze under Windows 98 and I was scanning stuff in no time. I use this scanner for photographs and I am satisfied with the scans I'm getting. The one big surprise was the space required for the applications that come with the scanner--- four hundred and fifteen (415) megabytes! Disks are cheap and voluminous these days so this isn't really a big deal, but it may catch some folks who are strapped for disk space by surprise. Fair warning. See all 9 customer reviews...

The quality of the scanned images is good. The bundled software works well. The instruction manual is poorly written, I had to experiment a lot to find the options I need. Most helpful customer reviews 82 of 82 people found the following review helpful. Nearly Perfection By A Customer I just received this scanner a few days ago and I'm very impressed. The image quality is astounding. It's also very fast, taking a mere 7 seconds to do a full area preview and 10 seconds (not including seek time) to scan a 4x6 color photo at 300 dpi. Setup was simple and straightforward, and the supplied documentation was ample, covering both setup and use of the scanner as well as installation of the various software packages. After hearing about the problems with the copier software and HP printers, I downloaded and installed the patch from the Epson support site before even using the scanner for the first time. I have an HP DeskJet 722c and so far there have been no problems, and the one-button copier feature has worked flawlessly. Are there problems with this Epson scanner? Yes, but they're more annoyances than anything else. First off, there's no on/off button. The manual says to unplug the scanner after use. C'mon Epson, you can do better than that... It's not critical that the scanner be turned off however, as after a few minutes it goes into "sleep" mode and all that's left is the telltale green LED saying the unit is on. Also, the manual says to position your document about a quarter inch from the edge of the scanner bed as there is a small area that the scanner doesn't read (in other words, don't push your document or photo to the plastic "stop" at the edge of the glass). This fault is offset, however, by the scanner's very cool ability to locate and align a document automatically. Yes, it's true: put a photograph anywhere on the bed, and even if it's crooked the scanner will find it, scan it, and automatically rotate it to square it up! All in all, this scanner is worth every penny and I highly recommend it if you're looking for an upper-end home scanner. 45 of 45 people found the following review helpful. For the Money, It's the Best By Ty Williams I purchased this scanner after having a positive experience with its predecessor (1200U, at a local lab). The set-up was amazingly simple (as it should be on a Mac) and the first scan was done 10 minutes after the UPS man left. The scanner delivers exceedingly good results in reflected mode (scanning from a print.) The colors are good and the focus is sharp. There is a noticeable level of noise in the blue channel. This is a problem that plagues all entry level scanners and is far more controlled in this model than in many others. In transmissive mode (scanning from film), the scanner fares slightly worse. When scanning slides, the sensor has some trouble seeing into the shadows. Though this is to be expected with a Dmax of only 3.2 (which does seems accurate). Again, this is typical of an entry level scanner and better controlled here than in other models. It delivers crisp, saturated images with accurate colors. When scanning traditional black and white films (Tri-X, Tmax, Delta, Neopan, ect) there is a slight amount of chromatic abberation. This means that the transition from a highlight to a shadow isn't crisp but is a very small rainbow. This problem can be avoided by using chromagenic (dye-based films). By this I mean use color-process film such as Ilford XP2Super or Kodak Black and While Plus. When scanning consumer grade color films (Kodak MAX and family, Fuji Superia and family, Agfa HDC and family), the scanner does an excellent job. Using the auto color correct button yields acceptable color more than 90% of the time. However, the scanner doesn't quite know what to do with professional grade films such as NPS, NPH and 160VC/NC. These films require scanning a piece of the film base to use as a mask in Photoshop. The software is easy to use and makes intelligent decisions the majority of the time. The so-called "curves" tool provided int he TWAIN driver is truly pathetic. You're far better off getting the scan close in the driver and then fixing it

Fast and Convenient By Mad Dog The Canoscan LiDE 80 is easy to use for a variety of applications and the USB Hi-Speed (no longer USB2) interface is super fast and convenient since it not only is the data link, but supplies power to the scanner. If your power hub is as congested as mine, you'll appreciate this bonus. The LiDE 80 comes standard with a film adapter unit so you can scan 35 mm film or unmounted slide film. although the literature claims the film scanner runs at 2400 x 4800 DPI, I don't buy it. My Nikon fim scanner is 2900 DPI and gives MUCH better scans of 35 mm film. No contest. Then again, it was quite a bit more (4X)expensive than the LiDE 80 and only scans film...The LiDE 80 includes software for automatic retouching of scratches and dust - and it also now has grain and fading correction. I tried these features on color photos taken over 50 years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Overall, this is a nice package that goes well beyond the typical bargain scanner. 83 of 88 people found the following review helpful. Good Scanner, Poor OS X Drivers By G. Colasurdo I got this scanner to replace a 1220U for the Film scanning and decent OS X drivers. Unfortunately the drivers on the CD are really bad, but the ones on-line (Tool Box 4.1.3 and LiDE 7.2.1.0 as of this writing) are better, so download them first. PhotoShop Elements is a great bonus but the OmniScan SE is a "classic" only app. Not Canon's fault but still disappointing. Also the film tray is for negatives, not slides so be aware of that. Otherwise it is a nice scanner, light weight, compact and combines USB and power in the same cable (down with AC adaptors!). Mac OS X people get the drivers from the website first. 43 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Most helpful customer reviews 261 of 263 people found the following review helpful. Best scanner for under $500 By Gadgester I simply love the Canon CanoScan 4200F flat scanner for prints and films. It's fast (both in scanning and transfering to the PC), quiet, and has superb scan quality, esp. on 35mm negatives. (I haven't tried scanning 35mm slide films.) Setting the 4200F up is pretty much a breeze, assuming you have Windows XP. (Windows 98 users will need to follow the instructions very carefully.) You first install the software -- the scanner driver and the scan toolbar (called "toolbox") are the only programs necessary for using the scanner; the other applications (photo editing, OCR and Adobe Acrobat) are optional. After restarting your machine (so the scanner driver loads and runs as a service), just connect the USB 2.0 hi-speed cable, and you are set to go. Using the scanner is also quite simple. You can scan in three ways: directly from your photo organizing or editing program (assuming it supports the universal TWAIN interface, which most imaging programs worth their pennies do); using the Canon Scan Toolbox; or pressing one of the four buttons on the scanner itself, which calls up the toolbox and automatically initiates a scan. The four buttons are: - Copy. Your PC must be connected to a powered-on printer for this to work. When you press copy, the Canon scans and sends the file directly to your printer. - Scan. This is the button for scanning. When you press it, the Canon scans and sends the scanned image to your designated photo editing program, which you specify once via the toolbox. (This button corresponds to the "Scan 1" icon on the toolbox.) - PDF. This turns the scanned image into a PDF file. - E-mail. This button scans and then calls up Outlook Express or Outlook with the image embedded as a JPEG attachment. The toolbox (toolbar) has more options for scanning. All are pretty straightforward. Each option can be configured in detail, or you can specify that all the settings be done in the driver itself. (The toolbox is simply an interface to the driver.) If you configure things in the driver, you'll even be able to adjust how the scanned image should look, in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, etc., etc. The options are endless, but in the beginning, using the toolbox makes scanning a breeze and less intimidating. One thing cool about the Canon is how it makes it easy to understand what resolution you should scan in. First, the 4200F is capable of 3200x6400 dpi (dots per inch). The 3200 dpi is its true optical resolution; that's how much fine details it can detect. The second number, 6400 dpi, refers to its "stepping" levels, which basically means the sensor can sample each inch 6400 times, but only detects up to 3200 dots. When you scan, the Canon asks you what *output* resolution and size you want, and then calculates the necessary input resolution for you. Say you are scanning a 4x6" photo but want to be able to print it 4 times as large (or twice the width and length, i.e., 8x12") and print at 300 dpi. The Canon will then automatically set the correct scan resolution of 600 dpi -- which is twice as much as printing 4x6 at 300 dpi. So you'll get a 2400x3600 file in pixels, which can then be printed at 8x12" at 300 dpi (2400/8=3600/12=300dpi). This concept of specifying output resolution rather than worrying about input resolution works esp. well for scanning negatives. Say you are scanning a 35mm negative. It'd be a pain to figure out which scanning resolution is best. But if you know you'd eventually want to print a 4x6" photo in 200 dpi, just tell the driver so, and the driver will do all the work for you and scan properly. Another feature I love is multi-scan, which lets you scan in several pictures at once and the driver automatically separates them. Here's how I use my 4200F: I set up the scan button so it's linked to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3's organizer. (You can link the button to any
