Polaroid 4000 DPI Scanner
Brand: Polaroid Model: Sprint Scan 4000 Platforms: Windows NT, Mac, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT 3.5, Windows NT 4, Windows NT 5, PowerMac, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server, Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and below, Windows Dimensions: 12.50" h x 5.50" w x 7.00" l, 8.00 pounds Ideal for scanning Advanced Photo System film formats Sharp images with 4,000 dots per inch (dpi) 3.4 optical density in under a minute Compatible with PC or Macintosh computers Single-pass sensor technology
The Polaroid 4000 DPI scanner is designed for the professional who demands businesslike efficiency, with high resolution and excellent image quality, from a film scanner. The Polaroid 4000 is adapted for 35mm film in strip or slide format (with an optional accessory, it will also accept APS film). It is a 36-bit film scanner with an optical resolution of 4,000 x 4,000 dpi, and dynamic range of 3.4. All these advantage tally up to premium quality and resolution. IQA imaging technology automatically analyzes and color-corrects your scan, reducing editing time. Combining excellent resolution with fast performance, single-pass sensor technology, and acute image quality, Polaroid has designed an impressive, easy-to-use scanner.Top-quality output is paramount in the design of the Polaroid 4000. It automatically eliminates surface imperfections such as dust and scratches. Furthermore, you'll find an impressive list of features, including split-screen preview, automatic image sizing, and saving-scan settings. Crisp clean colors and good tonality are central to Polaroid's design. Two more notable characteristics include precise image cropping that permits working with smaller sections of an image while still identifying recognizable detail, and an automatic advance of a six-image film strip or four-image mounted slide holder. The PolaColor Insight Pro software included with the product provides a simple interface and a tool for basic and advanced scanning tasks, compatible with both PC and Mac. You can save your images on the PC in TIFF and/or BMP formats, or on the Macintosh in TIFF, PSD, and/or JPEG file formats. The unit is matte black and compact, and comes with a SCSI-2 interface, a cable, a controller board, and AdvanSys's Super SCSI setup utilities. Also included are two carriers for 35mm strips and slides.

Good quality, very high price By A Customer Despite dramatic improvements in digital photography, film is still preferred by many photographers. For them, the Polaroid SprintScan 4000 (...) combines the highest resolution in a desktop film scanner with fast performance, excellent image quality, and a remarkably easy-to-use interface. The SprintScan is a 36-bit film scanner with an optical resolution of 4,000 by 4,000 ppi and dynamic range of 3.4. By comparison, the top resolution of the Nikon SuperCoolScan (...) is 2,700 by 2,700 ppi, with a dynamic range of 3.2. Matte-black and compact, the SprintScan comes with a SCSI-2 interface, a cable, a controller board, and AdvanSys's Super SCSI setup utilities. Also included are two carriers for 35-mm strips and slides; an optional APS film adapter is available. The unit also ships with a quick-start guide and a single page with instructions for installing under Windows NT. The main documentation is a 74-page PDF file. Though useful for novices, the documentation lacks detailed explanations and scan tips for pros. Setup and installation are relatively simple, so long as you follow the recommended sequence of events. For instance, you must insert the film carrier after (not before) the driver loads, or the computer "loses" the SCSI connection. Although the Mac version can be installed as a Photoshop plug-in, the PC version is not Twain-compliant, so you can't scan directly into any application. Also, no provisions are supplied for creating scripts, saving images in 12-bit color, or preserving customized settings as default values. Scanning with the SprintScan is fast and easy. The PolaColor Insight interface is intuitive and offers an impressive variety of manual and automatic tools. The SprintScan took only 20.4 seconds to scan a 12.8MB slide. But this blazing speed is somewhat tempered by a 49.5-second auto-calibration routine and by the time needed to name and save a file and then open it in an application. Image quality is excellent and holds up even when magnified. Colors are accurate and tonality is very good. Though the Polaroid Sprint Scan 4000 has occasional limitations, its image quality is superb. The scanner leapfrogs over the competition in price, ease of use, and most important, high-resolution scans. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT machine By D. Jordan Berson This unit is easy to use, and has a great user friendly software package. The quality of scans are superb, and now that the model is older it is very affordable. (I think it was quite expensive when introduced about 10 years ago). The one drawback is that as an older model it requires a SCSI connection, and many newer computers do not have a card to accomodate this. However, I installed one in my computer and got the scanner hooked up. I spent an entire winter scanning 3000+ vintage family slides from the 50's, and they came out REALLY beautiful. Starting with a cleaned/dusted slide and high-def scan, it is not hard after playing around with the software to crop, adjust colors and contrast, dodge and burn, sharpen, remove dust spots and overall drastically improve image quality from old faded originals. I brought the 1950's back to life with my sprintscan 4000, and with remarkable results. I would highly recommend this machine to professionals and beginners alike. Too bad Polaroid got out of the scanner business, because they got this one right. See all 2 customer reviews...

Good beginner-serious amateur scanner By Dave After reading review after review for film scanners I decided to purchase the HP S20xi and I don't regret it. If I properly exposed a slide in the first place I hardly need to make any adjustments to the scanned sample. The S20xi scans my color and chromogenic negatives wonderfully. The scanning software that is including in the box is good. With it you can crop, adjust brightness, shadow areas, colors, etc. before you perform the actual scan. My only complaint so far (I've only had it for three days and I've scanned about 60 pictures so far) is the dust. I have a light box and I clean the neg/slide until I'm sure it's spotless before I put it in the scanner. The scanned image still has some dust spots and I've use air on the scanner to no avail. It's not too big of a deal to me to remove the dust spots using Photoshop, but it would be nice if the scanner had ICE or at least was willing to let my air remove the dust! Overall, I'm very happy with the S20xi...if you want to enhance your images for personal digital printing or simply archive your photo library to CD (as I'm doing), the S20xi is a good alternative to higher priced scanners. 31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A dependable workhorse By caninehead I have an earlier SCSI version of this scanner (over 6 years old now and it still works great, how many IT products can you say that about?). In fact, it was my first scanner of any sort. It is a dependable workhorse that produces quality scans. The feeder for slides, film strips and prints is convenient. I use it to scan my 35 mm slides for submission to a magazine I contribute to and have had many published, some directly from the scans. It is rare that I ever scan above 600x800, even for direct publication. It is also a workhorse for my scans for web publishing and digital archiving. This scanner is the single best IT investment I have made over the years. HP's web site does include XP drivers for this scanner. 20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Good Amateur Scanner By Gerald W. Stump This scanner will do what the ads and reviews say it will do. This scanner does nice work on reproduction of family photos and slides into small paper prints. Resolution is marginal for display prints (depending on the slide and how large you want to go). I have used this scanner to archive 30 years of family and travel slides and am happy with the result. Now I am ready to start on film larger than 35mm and must turn to another scanner. I also would like to print 11x14 inch photographs and will have to rescan slides with a higher resolution machine. Keep in mind that this scanner will do the job it is intended to do but not much more. See all 12 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 300 of 308 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Machine By adanedhel I'm one to do a lot of research on a product pre-buy, but I bought this product on a whim at my local electronics store as a replacement for a blockheaded, poorly made, user-unfriendly HP All-in-One which I used as a secondary printer. Well, I must say, I was very impressed with this product from the moment I opened the box. The fit-and-finish is excellent and by touch, of an exceptional quality. Components fit and move smoothly and without the "jiggle" associated with hasty, sloppy manufacturing. Then, upon setup (this is on an Mac, by the way), I found the software intuitive, intelligent, and slick. Mine is setup using the Wi-Fi feature; the setup walks you through the process so concisely, efficiently, and simply that even a technological neophyte could accomplish it with ease. I simply plugged (temporarily, as the setup explains) an ethernet cable from the printer into my router (Time Capsule) and the software nearly instantly recognized the printer. A useful concept also is that with the Install CD, all you have to do is go to each computer on the network, and choose the "Add additional computer" option - this allows every computer in the network to print directly to the printer, rather than "through" a base computer (meaning that the printer is not connected to a computer which has to be on and not asleep for you to print with the printer). Speaking of printing, it exceeded by far my expectations for speed. I expect printing-over-Wi-Fi to be slower by some degree than wired printing; this printer responded as quick or quicker than wired ones to the printing command, with no lag in starting to print, or during printing, and printed color and black exceptionally fast and of high quality. Another thing I really appreciate (from my Canon i9900) is that the inks are separated by color, which means you can replace only those cartridges that are empty, and the printer comes in-box with all the necessary cartridges - full cartridges, not trial sizes, including a high-capacity black. It also comes with a phone line for fax setup and an ethernet cable for wireless setup or wired network hookup (so unlike most printers that you have to buy "real" ink and a USB cable for, you really can walk out the store with this box and have everything you need to get going - you'll need a separate USB cable only for direct printer-to-computer hookup, but who doesn't have a few of those lying around). The flip-out interface is also of great quality - the buttons are secure and pleasing to the touch, and the screen is large, bright, clear, and high-resolution. My one and only complaint is that if the screen were touch-controlled, the already quick interfacing would be even quicker and easier. But again, using the standard arrows and OK button is no hassle and accomplished the task readily. And for $199 (what I paid for it at the local big-box) I couldn't ask for a better, more complete, intuitive, capable, high-quality machine, than the one I got. 98 of 100 people found the following review helpful. Awesome. Scans documents without a PC! By Lon J. Seidman The Epson Workforce 600 is a very feature rich product, but it had me at 'scan to memory card.' It's a very simple feature that I've always wanted one of these multifunction units to implement. And Epson has executed it perfectly. Simply put a document in the autofeeder or flatbed, select scan to memory card, and push the button. It scans and safely stores the document on flash memory (it accepts a variety of flash memory cards) in either JPEG for PDF format. Epson even smartly added a file server which effectively turns the printer into a network attached storage device. These two features are so great I actually have no intention of ever plugging it into my computer. With its built in WiFi I keep it downstairs in my kitchen so I can grab and scan important documents before they

We were required to get a digital scanner for our office and our company standard unit costs around $8,000. The person who handled the selection for us happened to know someone who purchased an HP Digital Sender and raved about it. We purchased ours for just over $3,000 saving our company $5,000! I have to add that that $8,000 unit I mentioned only scanned in B&W and the HP Digital Sender scans in both B&W and color! Other than having the machine installed by one of our IT people who wasn't familiar with the machine's operation and gave us no manual AND occasional email problems that are likely internal and not the fault of the Sender, we're THRILLED with this machine. Just this morning - I logged in, selected my scan settings, and scanned four pages in less than 30 seconds. By the time I put the dust cover back on the machine and returned to my office (10' away), my scan was in my email Inbox. This unit allows various image/quality/output settings AND has a pull-out keyboard (we found it almost by accident) so that you can type in your login info instead of tapping letters on the screen! I can't say enough, it is the best office equipment purchase made in our office since our IBM Correcting Selectric Typewriter! REALLY! 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good sender, but one common issue. By Lavado Townsend We just got about 5 of these on base. The job I have is pretty much troubleshooting and fixing hardware/software issues with computers and select peripherals (including digital senders). After setting up 3 of these two of them started having the same problem with emailing color documents. Every page after the second shows up in blue (i assume them to be negatives of the actual images). I checked online and this seems to be one of the largest problems plaguing this otherwise really decent digital sender. The fix is to re-calibrate it but it seems to only work half the time. Im still currently troubleshooting because recalibrating it didn't work for me but it seem to had work for most people. Other than this the digital sender is pretty reliable and simple to use. If you don't want to send in color then just set it to black/white and it should send fine. See all 2 customer reviews...

That said, do not believe the printed literature for the included items. The package supposedly contains a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements. What it doesn't tell you is the included version is 10.4 which is at least five years old and is no longer supported by Adobe. This version will not work on the latest MAC OS. If you call Canon the answer is, "tough luck", there is nothing they will do. Adobe will only tell you that there is a new version that you can buy for $99.00 available on their web-site. Oh, also when I tried to install the package it came back and told me that the supplied software had already been registered. (The disk came from a factory sealed box). This was confirmed by Adobe and they said there was nothing they could do. Canon's response was you'll have to work that out with Adobe. The best I can say is, don't believe anything in print from Canon, It's a good scanner. Plan on buying your own copy of the Elements.CanoScan 8800F Flatbed Scanner, 4800 x 9600dpi 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Needs to rest By K. E. Perrins Scans great!. However after 2 or 3 scans I get a black streak in the results and some parts of the scanned slide are missing. This happens if I do several scans before doing any editing, but if I spent some time doing the editing before scanning, the scans are okay. So, do not scan scan scan edit, instead do scan, edit, scan, edit, scan edit, etc. 2 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Truly amazing By A Customer I think I was really awed when I scanned some black and white negatives, and got a positive for it and then adjusted the contrast and brightness, bringing out details that were not evident when I originally took the photo. I have also scanned color negatives, and made prints. I got it primarily to archive my extensive slide collection. I found that one of my slides had a scratch across a person's face. Using the sophisticated tools available with the program, I used multiple scans and the finished copy is scratch free. When using the 4000 dpi scanning setting, be prepared for some really large files. If one plans to get this, and one has a lot of material to scan, getting the largest available hard drive would be recommended. I plan to archive my slides to hard disk drive, then transfer copies as lower sized jpg files to a CD ROM. My only wish was that the program would have a way to put annotations on the copied slides; I am using a separate program to do that. I have found that my scans capture even the tiniest detail of the original slide, and one cannot ask for more than that. Some might think it a bit pricey for a scanner, but it does a fabulous job as a dedicated scanner.I wished they had provided a complete written manual; the detailed manual is on their provided CD-ROM, in Adobe acrobat format. The Abode program is provided, but it is 153 pages long and takes a bit of time to print. A shortened manual is provided, and covers most of the essentials so a complete manual printed out is not essential. The software with the scanner is very easy to use and the tools for adjusting the scans are interactive. If one is using XP on their computer, an updated progam for XP is available..., and is about 15MB as a zip file. I recently scanned a 32 year old Ektachrome slide taken under the worst possible conditions (indoors, incandescent lighting, with the outdoor film). It always had a yellow cast to it, which it normally would under those conditions. Upon recent scanning (to preserve it before it lost everything) it showed embeded dirt and scratches. I used the digital ICE, and it came out sparkling clear, and the drapes which looked like yellowed newspaper became a crystal clear cream white, as it was in the room where I first took the slide. I have also scanned old slides that were badly faded, and restored the color and luster. 104 of 105 people found the following review helpful. The best scanner for 35mm ... period. By Carl E. Feather After using a Nikon LS-1000 for two years and constantly being frustrated with the scanner's poor performance on slides, I was blown away by the first scan I did with my Coolscan 4000. The colors were right on, the density nearly perfect and best of all, no more processing artifacts thanks to the Digital ICE. I used to have to spend 15 minutes carefully cloning out those little dust spots and other defects on every high-res scan. Now I can concentrate on scanning rather than retouching. The sharpness of the images are noticeably improved, which I attribute to the ED lens. The color saturation is wonderful and shadow detail is excellent, even on a constrasty slide.I use a Coolscan 2000 at work and the 4000 is definitely a huge improvement over that scanner. For the [price] difference, the 4000 is the one to own.The Digital GEM and ROC are worth that price alone if you have slides or negatives in which the color has shifted. It is absolutely amazing this software restores these old images. I had some very red chromes from the 70s that it restored to full color. While some reviewers have complained about the sharpness of negative scans, I have not found this to be a problem. And Nikon includes the option of using a film holder rather than the negative adapter for scanning. In short, this scanner is the one to beat. I can't imagine 35mm film scanning getting any better. This one is a keeper,

I use Vista and Microsoft did not program Vista to recognize the drivers. I researched this problem on the internet and evidently I am not alone with this problem. No matter what I've tried - including downloading new drivers - Vista refuses to recognize it. My husband tried loading it on an older laptop that uses XP and, while it will recognize the drivers, the pictures are completely scrambled. It is going back. No wonder everyone is offering it so cheap! The old saying, "you get what you paid for" is sooo true. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Worked great until...it didn't By Sus When I first got this I scanned hundreds of pics of my grandmother from her youth upon her death at age 95. The pictures came out amazing. The device was light and connected to the usb port. I had to load pics onto trays which was pretty easy and gave me something to do while waiting for the scan. The photo editing software that came with it (photo impressions) did a nice job of general fixes. It is portable, lightweight and doesnt need a power source That said, I hadn't used it for a few months and took it out, plugged it in...and my computer will not recognize it.. I have tried everything! In searching the net it seems others have had this problem too..except there is no place to go for support for this product! And it looks like Hammacher Schlemmer has stopped selling it. This product did a greast job, basically taking a digital shot of pic under controlled lighting instead of scanning. It created reasonably sized great quality digital jpegs. Except now after only one year, it is nothing but an empty box :( 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Poor Quality By Laura Waszczuk The pictures are of very poor quality - save your money! My HP scanner/printer makes a far better digital copy of my old photos. Hovis I purchased this scanner from walmart about $69 and was hoping this was a better quality product than it's price might lend it to be. I was wrong. I am VERY knowledgeable with pcs and loading the driver software wasn't straight forward. You must use the software provided to load the driver and the software provided to scan imaes( you can use other to scan but then you can't calibrate the scanner). The images were not good. I had a canoscan scanner from years ago that was just more time consumming but did great on slides. I'll post one of each photo and you deside which is better. If your just trying to get the images to a basic digital format it is quick. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Poor output quality By David L. Kindervater The output quality is very poor. Scanned slides turn out dark and blue-ish. Recalibrating the scanner does not solve the problem. Tech support suggested a new driver, but installing the new driver made no change either. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. buyers remorse By James R. Johnson I found the unit to be cheap. It fell apart, the slide tray would get hung up but worst of all, the software did not seem to work leaving me with a lot of darkened pictures. A huge disappointment By DIpan If you are looking for great quality transparency scans using this sleek flatbed, you will be hugely disappointed. All the scans that I did for my slides were lacking in contrast, and lost significant amount of colour depth. More over, because of the lack of high optical resolution (I scanned at 1200 - the max optical resolution offerred by this scanner) the images even look slightly unfocussed !The preview and scan times are also too long. An average preview takes 3 minutes per slide (forget the 7 secs preview promised on the brochure - I never realised seven second even while scanning a colour photo at 300 res), and an average scan between 6-9 minutes.Scanned colour photo images came out slightly better - but the cost - equivalent images can also be had out of scanners about half the cost of this one !The scanner is well packaged with all the software I needed, the hardware did not give me any trouble while installing, the scanning software (vistascan) works well without crashing my PC.My reco - look for a better product. And if you really want good transparency scans - I guess it is better to go in for a dedicated transparency scanner 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Versatile Scanner By A Customer I've had this scanner for about 8 months now, with good results. The only minor issue I had came as a result of upgrading from Mac OS9.0.4 to 9.1, but I simply needed the updated driver that was on the Umax website to fix that. I use this daily with Photoshop 6 and I'm able to produce consistent results without incident, which is a big plus. The transparency adapter is not suitable for scanning tons of slides, but it does very nicely for the occasional negative, slide or positive film (4"x5" max size). I have found that it is extremely versatile and produces excellent results considering its flexibility. It allows me to say "yes" when the client says "can you do this" since I can throw just about eveything at it.If you need a versatile scanner to produce good quality without spending a fortune, this is a good choice. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Thumbs down By David Lari This scanner's flaws... hmm... where to begin. First, the driver GPF'd if I didn't have the scanner powered on during boot up. So, I always had it powered on when the computer was on. Then there developed a problem with the scans. I'd get bands of red hue in parts of the scan. Even when I rescanned, the bands appeared in the same spots. As was stated by other reviewers, forget the transparency option. The quality of transparency should be higher since, first it is not a reflective scan and secondly, it is from a first generation source (a negative) rather than a second generation source (a print). But the transparency feature on this scanner is very, very, very bad.All of this was rendered moot when the scanner failed completely. The power light was not even coming on. After investigation, I discovered a resistor on the main circuit board had begun to turn brownish black and melt. Don't know if this was a flaw in a component or a flaw in the design, but I didn't want to try to fix it and then have it burn my house down if it was a design flaw. So it's in the dumpster now.I'll go back to Microtek or to HP for the replacement. See all 12 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Average By A Customer This scanner is good and bad at the same time. It is horribly slow, but I'm using the pictures I'm scanning for a slideshow of pictures throughout my life at my Bar Mitzvah party, and the quality of the pictures are very good. Be warned, scanning negatives on this scanner requires very high resoulution (but I think that this is the way with all scanners I'm not sure), and it takes a VERY VERY long time to scan. It took ten to twenty minutes depending on the settings for ONE PICTURE. They turned out in good quality, but I was highly dissatisfied with the time it took. Overall, this scanner is pretty good. But if you are a person that needs pics in a hurry, this is not for you. But if you are creating a slideshow (like me) and have time for it, this scanner is a very good choice. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great Scans, Slower than Molasses in January By Kevin T. Quinn I bought this scanner because I was looking to scan negatives, and I was attracted by the low price and high scan resolution. Of course, you get what you pay for. In this case, it seems that I paid for Photoshop Elements 2.0 ($35), and a $100 scanner. The scans are quite sharp, and it comes with a lit adapter for negative scans. The downside is that the scanner is excrutiatingly slow. A 4800 dpi scan (4 times the resolution a film developing place puts on a photo cd) of a single image from a negative strip took nearly 10 minutes to scan. It was slow, but a very sharp and clear scan. A smaller scan (1200 dpi, roughly 1000 x 1500 image, about equivalent to a photo cd) took 5 minutes to scan the image. The other flaw is that the negative holder has no "feet," so if your scanner is not even, it will slide across the glass while you are scanning. Putting the back of the scanner off of the desk leant it back, and kept it in place well enough, but it's unfortunate that I had to make such a gimmicked solution. Again, though, you get what you pay for. For less than $150, it's hard to find a 9600 dpi optical scanner. Verdict - flawed, but nice image. 21 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By The Wine Commonsewer Another reviewer praised this scanner because it scanned photos well. I would concur, but other than that this scanner is a bust. It is clumsy to use and the controls are not user friendly. Despite claiming to make use of USB 2.0 technology it is excruciatingly slow, even with plain B&W low res text. It is virtually useless for scanning multiple pages of text into, for example, a .pdf file because after each page you have to tell it what you want it to scan again. And whose idea was the black background on the lid? Since it is difficult and time consuming to set up and scan you often end up with scans that are bordered with black rather than white. Endless pixels of waste that have to be cropped and also sacrafice some of the quality of the scan. I plan on donating the scanner to the Goodwill and I kick myself for not returning it while I had the chance See all 17 customer reviews...

By A Customer I haven't had this scanner for very long, but I have already made more than 500 scans with it, and it's is awesome. The preview scan is ridiculously quick: I can get a good idea of what my scan will look like in less than a couple of seconds. The software bundle is very nice for a beginner, wherein you can make automatic scans for email, web, file outputs with the push of the respective button on the scanner body. I tried the software out a few times and I was impressed with the results, but if you're using Photoshop you don't need to install the whole package. It only took a few minutes to set the thing up and do my first scan, which was pretty cool.Once you gain more confidence with the different elements in a scan (namely the relationship image size and resolution have with file size) you can use TWAIN for a more manual approach. This allows you to adjust your settings based on what your requirements for your final project are. For example, I could scan a postage stamp-sized picture at a high resolution and enlarge it into an 8" x 10" photo or larger and the quality would still look pretty good. Your final scan speed will depend on the resolution you've selected , but it's still fast at higher resolutions. The lower the resolution, the faster the scan time.I love using TWAIN, especially since it only took a few trial runs to figure it out. It's calculations for file size, resolution, and image size are all right there, so there's no guess work needed from you. Epson also provides pretty good documentation for doing things manually for your first time (like a reference table for your final output on projects for web, negatives, photos, text, etc.). The color has been consistently sharp and the resolution very crisp, on both the flatbed and the transparency unit.Notice, however, that this is not a portable scanner. It's bigger than some on the market and it is powered by an external power supply. But it is perhaps the best model on the market for projects that require excellent quality whether your project is personal or semi-profesional. 54 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Good for slides and negs, excellent for prints! By skunktrain I haven't printed anything out with the images I've scanned (yet) so I can't comment on that. All I know is that I needed a decent slide scanner, for an inexpensive price. This one satisfies that need.I find that all scans are on the "warm" side - there's a slight yellowish cast to the pictures. This is easy to get out quickly, using the bundled Photoshop Elements (or in my case, I used Photoshop 6). By the way, do you realize that Photoshop Elements is just thrown in with this scanner? And that it is a well-reviewed graphics software program that retails on its own for a respectable price? And that there is also a coupon (limited time offer - until 6/02) that allows you to buy the FULL version of Photoshop at a fantastic discount? (Half off, or thereabouts.) WHAT a deal! Something to think about if you want to get into Photoshop!Anyway, I found my slide scans to be of decent quality. Bear in mind, I am not exceedingly picky, because I have gone through several "consumer level" scanners with a slide attachment, and they all were pretty bad. So the fact that this one wasn't awful like all the others delighted me. But to be brutally honest, the slide scans are not all that sharp at higher resolutions (I scanned at 720 PPI). And sometimes the color needs extra tweaking. But I have been able to fix up and size down (and sharpen) my slide scans just fine. They look great for web images (even large wallpaper-sized web pictures), and I am guessing, are fine for printing on an ink-jet printer. (However, I found that my some of my darker and more underexposed slide scans didn't look that great, and required more Photoshop adjustments.

A Major Disappointment By Jack Jarosik Obviously I did not spend enough money for a product to capture my old 35mm slides onto computer. The only way I can use it is to capture the image with Snag-it software when the scanning camera brings it up. The transfer icon does nothing. I contacted Ion tech for help and was left hanging. The products in the accessory kit are useless dodads. See all 1 customer reviews...

Good little machine for the money By Phydeaou I purchased this little guy in order to get the memories off of multiple thousands of slides that have been sitting in my parents' garage for 20-50 years. I read many reviews of this machine and the competitors and I went down to my local professional camera shop where the guy spent 30 minutes explaining about these technical details that I didn't much care about in a $400 scanner. I'm sure that would've been lovely, but I am looking to capture memories not the full depth of color of professional photography. I didn't have high expectations after reading the reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. After messing around with the settings for a bit I learned about all I needed to and I'm really happy with the quality of the scans, knowing that I spent less than a hundred bucks. It's worthwhile if you aren't expecting some magical machine for this price. See all 1 customer reviews...

Easy and great scan quality By Mistress Blue After wistfully wanting a slide scanner but knowing they were out of my price range, I jumped at the chance to get one under $500. Normal scanners just don't have the resolution to do slides or negatives. I was expecting a lot of hassle, as is typical with periperhals, but this little scanner was really easy to set up and use. It lets you make corrections to contrast, color level, brightness, etc., before you actually scan. I take a lot of slides and can finally make prints from them easily on my printer (before i had to pay big $$ to have slides printed, since they have to make a negative and then print from that, resulting in major quality loss). I also take a lot of black and white portraits, but don't have a darkroom. I can finally tweak the image just like I'm developing it myself with chemicals.Scanning is fast and the results are sharp and colorful. It's pretty amazing for the price. 56 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Kudos to H/P By R. Lade Thank God for H/P! I do a lot of photography and being a purist (using film and a darkroom) I resisted the move to digital imaging mainly because I couldn't find what I needed without a second mortgage on my condo. I needed to be able to scan negatives mainly because the scan quality is higher resulting in better print quality. When I saw the S20's bang for the buck, I knew that my digital imaging time had come. This scanner is the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned. And knowing H/P quality to be what it is, I bought my S20 with every confidence and not a second thought. My faith has been well-rewarded. I couldn't ask for more for what I have invested. Anyone planning to scan photos, slides, and negatives need look no further than the S20. Thanks H/P! 75 of 77 people found the following review helpful. Top quality professional-level scans By Digilante Although the cost of this scanner is still prohibitive to some, the fact is that this is a professional-quality film scanner at an excellent price.Initially I purchased the much cheaper Epson Perfection Photo 1200. It had dead spots along the scanning array - turned out the entire batch of a few hundred scanners was faulty. I then decided to splurge and got the HP S20, and I have not looked back.Installation is tricky - so be sure to read the instructions in the (VERY POOR!) manual. Once you have that going, the rest is a breeze. The included software is fantastic in that it's analysis of the image and automatic adjustment of colour, balance, exposure, etc, is dead right 9 out of 10 times. Under- or over-exposed slides and negatives are no longer an issue. I love the exposure control, which allows to adjust exposure separately for light, medium, and dark regions - most scanner software only has a single exposure control. This allows you to make excellent repairs to a face that came out too dark in a sunny picure.Resolution of course is spectacular - a bit too spectacular perhaps since every single microscopic dust particle gets duly represented on the scanned image :-) Seriously though, the results of blowing up about a fifth of a slide and printing it as a full page on an HP PhotoSmart P1000 printer were excellent. The scanner is a bit noisy, and also very slow - especially at the high resolutions, as can be expected. Slides, negative strips, as well as photographs are dealt with relatively easily. The only problem that I see is that the scanner is unable to scan a single frame of a negative (only strips of two or more). This is an issue with slides when you want to scan the maximum frame area - i.e. scan the slide without the mount. I think the solution will be to buy a slide mount that is easily re-openable, and use a craft-knife to cut out a larger viewing area.In summary, if it is convenience and speed you want, then perhaps this is not for you - however if scan

I didn't buy this from Amazon (sorry, someone else beat the price), but I am pleased with it. The other reviewer (at this time) complained about the lack of usb cables--but I'm not entirely sympathetic. First, this is standard practice for Epson. If you didn't know it wasn't there, then you probably haven't bought an Espon before this. Second, there is actually a good reason for this: most people are not buying a first printer at this point, and pretty much all cables are the same (as long the connectors fit, you're good to use it). This cuts down on their costs, which hopefully means a slightly less expensive printer. I personally have 3 or four cables for this printer, and don't want any more. As far as quality goes--I don't have any complaints. It does borderless (edge-to-edge) printing on cardstock (doesn't support it on regular paper) without any problems, which is one of the things I look for in a printer. It also doesn't show any banding or striping, which is good for printing photos. Memory stick support is good (I have a Sony camera that uses Memory Stick), and works well. Overall, a solid printer. As long as the print heads stay clean, I'll be happy. 32 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Stylus CX7800 By J. Demick This printer, being my 4th one, is great! I started off with an Epson 740i on my Mac, went to a Lexmark Z52 (awesome talk feature), then went back to Epson for the CX5200. I had to part with that one because of a head problem, but this one is the best one so far! I love the borderless prints, and they look like you just visited the print shop! The scanning and the PictBridge (memory card/digital camera cards) are both very useful and it also includes a device for scanning negatives and slides! Although it doesn't include a USB cable to hook it up to your computer, if you previously had a printer with a USB cable, then just use the previous USB cable that came with the previous printer. I used the one from the CX5200 (although short), it works great! Cartridges are slightly expensive, but a great machine for anyone needing a great all-in-one printer! 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Zero Stars For Epson By S. Weber My first Epson Stylus the print heads went out 2 weeks before the warranty ran out (fortunately for me). Tech Support (my dime) was real helpful, sent me out a replacement Fed Ex and they didn't want the old one returned to them. Because I only had a couple of weeks on the warranty, they explained that the warranty on the replacement would only be good for 30 days and they suggested I buy an extended warranty for $25, which I did. Replacement printer arrived and it was obviously a used, scratched up piece of work that didn't work from the very beginning, and no ink to get it set up. It refused to take the paper in. Either got the Out of Paper code or Paper Jam code. There was paper loaded and it never even took the paper down in the printer to get it jammed. Called Tech Support (my dime) got an apology and they were sending out another replacement immediately Fed EX. They don't want the old one back. What about that extended warranty? Well that's transferable and all I had to do was call the warranty service and give them the new model number when it arrives. Next replacement arrives (no ink to get it set up). I call to transfer the model number and the support guy was rude, refused to let me transfer it, told me the person I talked to was wrong and I asked him to speak to a supervisor to help me get a solution to my problem. He was as high as I was going to go (said he). There was nothing I could do but purchase another extended warranty. I gave him the name and reference numbers of all the people I had spoken with and was told that he hadn't heard of any of those people. I gave the phone number

Brown To start off, let me say that I am traditionally not a fan of HP's products. I did, however, view this all-in-one as having some nicer features than some others and took a chance. I feel that generally HP does well with hardware products and or designs but struggles with their software integration with their products. I feel this is the case here as well. I have had my 3210 for about 2 weeks and here are my experiences. Pros: i) Scanning resolution and overall quality is quite good. ii) Printing quality is also good. I wasn't planning on doing a ton of printing but based on experiences I will probably do more than anticipated because of the good results. iii) Scanning and printing are both pretty quick. Marketed as the fastest picture printer all-in-one on the market... can't compare with others but I suspect they are correct here. iv) I was happy to find in my research that replacement ink cartridges are NOT terribly expensive and they are easy to replace and know if they are running low. Cons: i) Paper magazine is small so it doesn't hold a lot -- minor. ii) Software install was more of a pain than I was expecting. Installation on WinXP SP1 was generally OK but on WinXP SP2 it was a struggle. Not HP's fault, certainly, but they weren't able to make the installation easier to prevent some of these isssues or frustrations. I hope they have a lot of tech support people available as this product sells. iii) Network configuration was not as automated or straight forward as they could have been. iv) Software interface isn't as easy and fluid as it could be. I think that those who purchase this product that don't have some comfort with computers will be on the phone with HP often. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase thus far but still have some configuration to work through. In HP's defense, I haven't called or emailed their tech support -- but I shouldn't have to and my schedule makes this tough. Again, I feel the hardware implementation is quite good but their installation software and interface is lacking. 98 of 103 people found the following review helpful. Excellent product getting a bad rap By M. Zeissler After reading all the reviews here, and against my better judgment, I bought a 3210 - because it had the exact features I was looking for in a multi-function device. My experience was light years apart from what the others have left on this site. Please understand that I carefully read the instructions and gave some thought to the process before connecting the printer to my network. Additionally, my system is clean and well maintained; i.e., I have no spyware, adware or viruses, and run weekly scans to keep it that way. Your mileage may differ. Software install - no issues. At 1.1GB it's a big install, but I had no problems with it. The installer correctly detected my firewall and had me disable it after I detached my network from the Internet. After the required reboot, it finished installing without any hiccups. I also made sure to click on the "HP Software Update" within the HP Solution Center before doing anything further, installed the rest of the updates and rebooted. Again, no issues at all after making sure the software load was completely current. Network configuration - no issues. I have a custom configuration for my network; I setup the IP address on the 3210 manually and added the printer to my router and firewall *before* installing the software. During the installation process, the installer spotted the printer at the correct IP address that I had already given it and moved forward without any incident. Paper pickup and out of paper notices - no issues. I use GP Advantage Premium Ink Jet paper from CostCo and am having no issues whatsoever. Same thing with bulk Kodak photo paper from CostCo. Most inkjet printers have an issue with overfilling the paper
