Not quite Vista-Ready By Thursday As of early April 2007, here's what happens when you attach this scanner to a PC running under Vista. Instead of using the software & drivers supplied on CD's included with the scanner, you have to go to HP's website and download a temporary driver. This driver enables the scanner to just barely function, as a stopgap until HP gets around to releasing robust, fully-compatible, software & drivers. The barebones driver essentially tells the scanner to default to whatever scanner software utility is included in Vista. This means you will be scanning thru a Microsoft interface, not an HP one. As such, you get the ability to save images as JPG files, but not as PDF's. In other words, the scanner's 4 dedicated one-touch-scanning buttons don't do that much for you; they just take you into Microsoft's scanning interface, enabling you to scan & save into JPG files. HP has no comment on when they will get around to releasing fully functional Vista-compatible drivers & software. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, the scanner seems to work. It's reasonably fast at 300, but high resolution settings take a long time. It's reasonably quiet. The lid lifts right off the scanner if you have a thick/bulky object to scan. If you scan something small, you need to cover it with a sheet of white paper, or else the film negative slot in the lid will appear in the background of what you scan. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An OK scanner for an OK price By Richard D. Mayatt The scanner is a little noisy. The software leaves a little to be desired. Your settings are not remembered between scans. Overall, it is a good scanner for the money and the scan quality is very good on prints. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. HP Scanjet G3010 Photo Scanner By Kirby It took me 3 weeks to figure out how to get it to work with my Windows XP. The directions said to install the software, then hook up the scanner to the computer. Didn't work, and I couldn't find any online help from HP. I finally decided to uninstall it (again, for about the 6th time), and then hook up the scanner to the computer first, then install the software, and it finally worked. Installing the scanner first prompted some other software already on my computer to install the hardware, which it didn't do by installing the software first. Does a nice job of scanning and editing, except no print-preview when selecting copy. See all 18 customer reviews...

More Than Satisfied By Charlie We have photos going back thirty years that have been sitting in photo albums that we never look at. Our goal was to transfer all of our photos and digitize them so that we could view them on our computers at our convenience. Using a hand scanner is a learning process. One must be patient and not try and scan too quickly. The results from the scanner are very good. What really matters is the quality of your photos and the computer program you are using to transfer them to your hard drive. This is a very good product that is more than adequate for the job. By Guy Terry I had planned to buy a Coolscan III from E-bay to catalog my extensive negative collection, because I couldn't afford the LS-2000. With the SCSI interface and the other technical difficulties of the Coolscan III, I was a little hesitant. Then came the Coolscan IV ED. This scanner and software package offered everything that the LS-2000 did, and is much easier to use and operate. I have not used Digital GEM or ROC, but the Digital ICE is amazing. My brother, a photojournalist, thought that allowing the scanner to automatically remove scratches was silly, since it could be done (so he thought) much faster and better in PhotoShop. After trying two scans of the same frame, he never scanned without the Digital Ice turned on again! The negatives I have are from the middle east, and are very scratched. Fortunately, the Nikon Coolscan IV has a forth, infrared channel that can detect what is a scratch and what is a line on the negative, and remove the scratch without any hint of what damage was on the negative. Using USB (compared to SCSI) with the ICE on makes for a longer scan time that doesn't get much shorter with lower resolution. I have something else open (I'm scanning now) while I work with it, but the results are worth the wait. There is some noise in the lighter tones (negatives, haven't used slides but the noise would be in the darker tones there) but I may try an aftermarket scanner software called Vuescan to eliminate that with multi-pass scanning. The CSIV doesn't support multi-pass scans, but with some aftermarket software it will. The Nikon Scan software is a little strange, and there's not much that's user friendly about it, but if you have a good working knowledge of PhotoShop, PhotoImpact, etc., then youshould understand the controls enough to experiment and figure everything out. If you are a professional photographer looking for something that will allow 11 by 14" enlargement from a 35mm negative, or just an ambitious amateur, driven by the peer pressure of your professional photog dad and brother, this scanner is the one! 87 of 87 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Film Scanner By CAPoiDog The technology in this device delivers outstanding scans with little effort. The dynamic range is typically better than camera shot film and the color fidelity is outstanding. I attribute this to the RGB LED illumination system that is very well calibrated. Without ICE on, the scans are quick at 40 seconds or so. However, the ICE algorithms chew up a lot of CPU cycles and slow down the process considerably. The good news is that you can easily batch scan and walk away from the scanner for as long as it needs to process. The software is clunky and nowhere near as powerful as it could be, but Nikon isn't known for software anyway. I haven't encountered any crashes or weird behavior from the unit, but I think that earlier software was pretty buggy judging from some of the reviews I saw on other boards.I've scanned over a hundred rolls of "legacy" film to build up a digital library of family pictures. I can't say enough about the image quality. ICE is a marvel. It eliminates scratches, dust, film grain and can reconstruct color from faded film.I've been working with digital photographic systems for over 10 years, starting with high end laser film recorders, so I know a few things about the subject. If you need a film scanner and are willing to shell out more than a few bucks, this is a top-notch product. 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. The best way to go for scanning negatives By Travel & Tech The Coolscan IV is definitely worth the price for scanning negatives. I looked at flatbed scanners and cheaper film scanners previously, but in the end I bit the bullet and bought the Coolscan. I have no regrets about doing this. The resolution of the scanned

Canon CanoScan 3200F Scanner

Brand: Canon Model: 9050A002 Platform: Mac OS X Original language: English Dimensions: 2.70" h x 18.70" w x 10.20" l, 6.10 pounds 1,200 x 2,400 optical resolution 48-bit color depth, 16-bit grayscale Capable of scanning an A4 page in just 17 seconds Z-Lid expansion top for bulky objects USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface; compatible with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

Early Adopters Pick: October 2003. One of the fastest flatbed scanners available, the CanoScan 3200F delivers impressive 1,200 x 2,400 dpi scans in 48-bit color, and it corrects scratches and other aging effects. A film adapter lets you scan negatives and transparencies. The scanner also boasts sleek lines and a gloss-finish lid with a textured surround to prevent finger marking. The CanoScan 3200F can scan an A4 page in just 17 seconds (at 600 dpi, using Windows XP with USB 2.0 and a Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz processor and 256 MB RAM), making it twice as fast as its predecessor, the CanoScan 3000F. A super-fast USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection transfers image data from scanner to computer up to four times faster than standard USB connections, while an ASIC controller chip takes advantage of increased memory to process large data files in record time. The scanner engine is both faster and more powerful than those in previous models. The scanner's Fast Multi-Photo mode creates separate de-skewed files from a single-pass scan of multiple photographs, while Canon's QARE Level 2 technology automatically removes dust and scratches from scans of reflective originals; it also corrects for color fading and graininess, saving you hours of manual retouching. Four customizable "EZ" buttons can be individually configured to perform commonly used functions. These can include scanning straight to a PDF file, scanning directly to a printer (copying), and scanning automatically to a ready-to-go e-mail attachment. Since not everything can be scanned in single-sheet form, the 3200F's special Z-lid accommodates very thick items and applies equal pressure across the entire document, ensuring great quality when scanning from books, magazines, and manuals. The CanoScan 3200F comes with a host of powerful applications: Ulead DVD Slide Theatre creates DVD playable slide shows and writes these to CD-R. It's ideal for converting photo or transparency sets into television viewable slide shows. ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5 is an image-editing program that handles color adjustment, labelling, and album storage and retrieval. OmniPage SE 2.0 is a powerful Optical Character Recognition application that allows scanned text to be converted into recognisable text characters/data. What's in the Box Scanner, USB cable, AC adapter and cord, setup poster, user's manual, CD-ROM

By A Customer I bought this scanner primarily to be used to scan old photos and negatives, but also wanted the occassional document to be crisp and clear. I have been thrilled with my results so far. The photo correction (during the scan) does a wonderful job of clearing up the effects of aging although it did tend to add a bit of blue to the "true" colors of the photos. I have a separate photo enhancement software package that I use as I don't think the software included with the scanner is adequate for my purposes. Documents scan well and I LOVE that you can save it as a text document! The scan speed is great too--even at 1200ppi! A wonderful scanner and a bargain for the price! 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Works great with Mac OS X By Emily Lessard I've tried a lot of scanners with my Powerbook (Epson, HP, UMAX and Canon) - NONE of them worked as well or as fast as this one. For all you Mac people out there, you know how hard it can be to find software and hardware that works fluidly, especially with OS X. I've scanned photos, slides and negatives and had great results with all three. I highly recommend this product. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A must have for amateur photographers By Birder Lover "Steve" If you are like me and have switched to a digital camera and have some old negatives and prints that you would like to incorporate in your electronic presentations, this is a perfect scanner. The quality is comparable to my old print film and it brings to new life old pictures. Agree completely with the reviewers who recommend Photoshop or Elements to work with the scanner. The start-up guide could have been more informative, but I played with it a bit and no problem. See all 9 customer reviews...

By Mark Although I'd been successfully using a Canon CanoScan LIDE 500f to scan OLD 35mm color and B&W negatives, it was slow going. Many of the negatives had curled up with the low humidity of Winter and mounting them into the 500f's slide adapter was quickly becoming a nightmare. I worked out how long it was taking me to mount and scan each negative, and took a look at my remaining workload (about 2,000 negatives and mounted 35mm slides remaining). It became clear I needed a faster solution both in terms of mounting and scanning speed. Since the 500f's slide attachment only supports film strips, the new device had to support mounted slides. Also, the new device had to be simple to operate, allowing me to get negatives and film strips mounted as quickly as possible, while also having facilities to secure srips curled from low humidity. That's when I saw the VuPoint FS-C1-VP 35mm scanner. It was cheap, simple, and appeared to do everything I needed. ------THE UNIT The VuPoint 35mm slide scanner is exactly what it appears to be, a 5 megapixel low-mid range CCD in a plastic housing. The housing contains a mini lightbox at the bottom to illuminate 35mm slides/negatives for scanning by the CCD. Simply take your slides or negatives, mount them in the included trays, and slide the trays into the scanner unit. Each tray window snaps gently into place, helping you to align slides/negatives under the CCD. The trays are VERY GOOD at holding curled negatives securely. (Extremely curled/rumpled negatives may introduce shadows into the scan. To relax the slides fully, try holding the tray over a steaming pot for about 10 seconds.) The build quality of the VuPoint scanner is quite high. Although made of plastic, it has a very nice feel (akin to a 'satin finish' cell phone) and the mounted slide and filmstrip trays appear durable and fit firmly into the unit. The unit gets power from an attached 4 foot long USB 2.0 cable, so it has an extremly small desktop footprint. The scanner is also insensitive to attitude, allowing usage virtually anywhere, from any angle (sideways on your lap, in bed, etc) making it much more likely you'll get that scanning job done. ------SCANNING I installed the scanner drivers ONLY, ignoring the image editing software that came with the unit (Photoimpression 6) and instead chose to scan directly into PhotoShop CS3. Using this method I was only able to 'dumb scan' at the highest resolution of 2592x1680. For negatives, this means you will need to invert the image after scanning and then perform color correction/level adjustment/unsharp masking/etc. Mounted slides or film stips will scan positive but will still need additional filters applied for best results. If you're scanning into CS3, create ACTIONS to handle typical slide archetypes (negative, positive, blurry negative, desaturated positive, scratched and dusty slide, etc). In practice, the scan driver shows you a low framerate preview of the image under the CCD. If you wait between 5 and 15 seconds, the light levels in the image will balance and be ready for scanning. A sequence of positives with extremely different light levels will push your waiting time towards the maximum. In extreme cases you can wait 45 seconds+ for decent balancing. To initiate a scan you either press the 'copy' button on the unit, or click the 'snapshot' icon via the scanner software driver. Snapshots are quick, but once you have a snapshot you then need to 'transfer' the image to CS3. This can take as long as 30 seconds per image. The driver holds 12 snapshots. Once this 'buffer' is full you need to transfer the snapshots to CS3. The driver grabs a decent amount of CPU while its previewing - taking 60% CPU on a 1GHz Pentium M laptop, and 40% CPU on a 2GHz P4. I'd imagine CPU usage would be around 20% on a dual core (will test this out later).

Most helpful customer reviews 49 of 53 people found the following review helpful. Fast, high quality scans, but.... By A Customer I bought this primarily for the automatic photo feeder. It was great to be able to put in a stack of photos (I went up to 25 at a time) and walk away while it scanned. Had only one or two times when the feeder jammed; wished it would have allowed continuing after clearing the jam instead of stopping scanning on the batch completely. Quality is excellent but I'm returning it as it takes too much time to adjust the scans afterwards ("auto straighten" feature doesn't help--photos frequently feed crooked; part of scanner hardware ends up in the scans; frequently get 1/2" black band on left in scans). I might as well scan each manually so it will be done right the first time. 23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Not perfect, not awful. By A Customer After reading all the negative reviews, I hesitated to purchase the 5500c. But with the knowledge that I can take it back for a full refund within two weeks, I bit the bullet and purchased one. I really, really wanted a scanner that could automatically feed photos, as I have intended for years to digitize all my prints, slides etc.; but sitting in front of the computer for hours and hours, manually feeding thousands of photos one by one, has so far not been working for me. Life is too short. So I am happy to report that so far, I have experienced only minor glitches with the 5500c, which can be expected of just about any new computer software or hardware product these days. (Hopefully this review is not premature!) Some people complained about how the software automatically organizes photos by month. What they don't mention is that there is a box you can simply check if you don't want it to do it that way. Further, under one of the settings menus you can select the destination folder, which allows limitless organizing possibilities. For example, in Windows Explorer you can create a folder called "wedding photos" and then program the scanner to send all your wedding photos to that folder, automatically sequentially numbered. Then you can create a separate folder called "vacation photos," change the setting in the scanner software, and send all your vacation photos there. It could not be easier. So I don't get what all the hub-bub is about.Second, people complained about endless software installation problems, freezes, driver conflicts, etc. I have a Dell P3 600MHz with 128MB ram, running Windows 98 - not exactly top of the line - and I had absolutely no problems, conflicts or errors installing and running the software first time up. I was scanning photos within 30 minutes of pulling the machine out of the box. So maybe I am just lucky, but thankfully I cannot report the same issues or frustrations. Finally, the ADF. Just about everyone reported problems with the photo feeder, and I must admit, I experienced a few jams when I got down to the last 3 or 4 photos in each stack of 20 or 30. Maybe it will get worse as dust accumulates on the rollers. But contrary to other peoples' reports, even when I did get the "document jam" message, I did not lose any of the photos that had scanned through on that run (all of which just fed through like clockwork) -- so all I had to do was stick the 3 or 4 remaining photos in on top of the next stack, and they went right through. All the previous photos went right into the designated folder. And yes, the scans do show part of the track on the underside of the cover - but I don't care. I am just archiving all these photos so I can retire my shoe-boxes full of photos to a shelf already reserved in the basement, and have all my photos on a CD or two. So if I later have to manually crop all these scans, big deal. The advantage of not having to sit in front of my computer, endlessly lifting the scanner lid, placing a photo, lowering the lid and hitting "scan" thousands of times, outweighs all the imperfections of this

Stivali If you are like me, you have taken thousands of photos over the years only to stuff the prints into a box never to be seen again. Even albums get tucked away and can be difficult to share with friends and family. In an age where digital media sharing devices and large screen TV's are affordable and abundant, digitizing those old photos is a better way of sharing them. Enter the ScanPro 35mm slide and negative scanner. I was skeptical at first that such an inexpensive scanner would do the job. So far, after the first few hundred scans, I've been proven wrong. Here is what you need to know. First, this is not the best scanner if you consider yourself a professional and want the best possible quality image. The images I have scanned over the last 2 or 3 days are better than acceptable to preserve memories from more than 20 years ago. They also display quite nicely when running a slide show on my 67" screen through my DirecTV DVR. Second, the bundled software (BlazePhoto from BlazeVideo)is very intuitive and easy to use. It doesn't require a degree in rocket science to understand. The process is simple. Place the negative strip in the carrier and insert it into the scanner. Wait for the scanner to adjust the image's brightness and contrast. The preview panel allows you to manually alter the brightness and color settings before you take a final scan. Up to 12 images can be scanned before having to save them. Each image will be uniquely named using the current date and time and a manual counter that the software continually updates with each scan. Despite its ease, I did find that the software is missing some features or functionality that might make it even better. I expect that any other program (e.g. Adobe Photoshop) that can interface with a USB scanner would work just as well. Lastly, it is important to note that you should disconnect any non-essential USB devices from your computer prior to using the scanner. Any additional load can affect the amount of light projected on the film which will subsequently produce an inferior image. This advisory is clearly stated in the owner's manual. Overall, I recommend this device for hobbyists and family photogs alike with lots of memories to save. Personally, I find it easier than using a flatbed to scan individual prints and is certainly much less expensive than paying someone to do the processing for you. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Great buy! I would recommend it! By L. DeGroat I have read many, many reviews on film and slide scanners. I was always told you get what you pay for. I was very skeptical on buying this product at this low of a price. I was buying it through Amazon.com and thought they had a good return policy if it was something that was not good so I ordered it. At the time of my purchase, they were also giving a 2Gig card with the scanner. Made the purchase even better. I received the unit on Friday and just couldn't wait to use it but had to wait until the following Monday to try it out. I purchased it to scan my wife's, parents slides from 30-50 years ago for a Christmas gift and some of the family was around and didn't want to give anything away. I tried 35mm film first and was not to impressed with the outcome but I hadn't used the program to touch up the images yet so I am not ruling it out. As I mentioned though, I bought it to do the slides. All I can say is WOW! They came out really good. I haven't done any touch up on them and not sure I need to. YES, they may not be as great as if you sent them off but they look really good and I don't have to worry about them being lost in the mail, if you know what I mean. I did about 600 slides in one day (off and on, not straight through) and it was a lot quicker than I thought it would be. I asked my wife if it was worth me spending a $100 for this equipment

Comparison of the 1660 & 2400 scanners By A Customer I purchased both the 2400 and the 1660 scanners to compare thierresults.I previously tried and returned the Microtek 4900 and the 4850, both had an acceptable quality for photo scanning ( though they were both a little undersaturated and soft)but I had problems with both not being able to go into standby mode, the light would always remain on even when the software said it should be out. Also the scanner button program when loading would never be able able to locate the scanner and was constantly running in the background.Enough said steer away from them. Now on to the quality products.I did some very extensive testing head to head on both units using various color test charts, black and white resolution charts and many detailed photos of various sizes.I then tried scanning them at different resolutions/dpi. After repeating the test numerous times my conclusions are, even though the 2400 can scan at higher resolutions 2400x4800 which should be better for scanning slides and negatives than the 1660's lower 1600x3200 resolution, the 1660 scanner had a more vivid, slightly sharper scans when comparing them with the 2400's scans. These results were equally noticable both on screen and in their printouts.(I am using the HP Photosmart 7150 printer which I reviewed also)So, unless you do need the higher resolutions of the 2400 scanner(which still gives good results)along with it's Packaged Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.1,you would be better of saving yourself the $$ and purchase the 1660 instead. These results were substantiated by numerous other people even including the Epson Rep which I met at Best Buy who had a chance to compare my printouts of the scans. She suggested to contact Epson's Tech Staff to find out why this is so.Buy the way I am a Computer Tech myself, and am a perfectionist when purchasing new equipment. 43 of 43 people found the following review helpful. 3rd Try On Epson And Closest Being A Perfection By A Customer This is my thrid Epson scanner and this is the one is the best of the bunch after owning Perfection 610 and Perfection 1240U. My primary reason to upgrade to this scanner is USB2 connection which makes a big speed difference especially on high-res scans. The quality of photo scan is magnificent - a printout of the scan from my Epson photo printer looks virtually identical to the original, something my two prior Epson scanners don't quite achieve. In addition, when scanning magazines, the moire pattern is less pronounced than my previous Epsons as well. In term of installation, I encounter absolutely no problem. I don't even bother to install the enclosed CD-ROM - don't really care about the bundled photo software anyway since I use Photoshop. My best advice - for ALL SCANNERS AND PRINTERS, IF POSSIBLE ALWAYS DOWNLOAD THE LATEST DRIVER FROM THE MANUFACTURER instead of using the bundled CD-ROM which almost always contains outdated drivers. Alternatively, after installation IMMEDIATELY update the driver to the latest version that supports your operating system. Before buying/installing any new products, always check the manufacturer's web site to see if there's any issues / software updates with the product. In summary, you get what you pay for - Epson 1660 is a great, fast scanner. 74 of 78 people found the following review helpful. The best for the money By A Customer I have used the FS2710 for over a year and find it to be the best for the money IMHO. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is the 3.2 Dymanic Range. I have used the scanner to scan litterally hundreds of slides, both mounted and in strips, without any problems what-so-ever. The scanner was simple to install, the software works flawlessly. All of my images on my site were made with this scanner. Instead of just taking someones word for it, look and judge for yourself. 71 of 85 people found the following review helpful. APS Film Handling Unusable By R. A Swirsky WARNING!: To Scan APS film you have to MANUALLY crank the knob to the desired frame and insert the adapter in.To scan the next frame you have to PULL OUT THE ADAPTER and crank it to the next image. It would take HOURS to can a roll of 40 APS film.If you're looking for a way to scan an entire roll of APS film, this is NOT the solution for you. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Not for the faint at heart By Brad Bonner I have had this scanner for a year adn a half and have put nearly 5000 slides through it. I am happy with the overall quality of the scans for what I paid for this. I use this as a proofing tool-- I only get my negatives developed (when I shoot prints) and then scan them to proof them. Or if I shoot slides and want to put them on the internet or retouch them. The scanner will make up to an 8x12 at 400dpi. which is okay. Again you must look at what you are paying. The neat scratch removing features that the upper models have would be nice but again repeating for the price this is a great little scanner. I have been happy. I even got it to work in XP but it did take some research. Info for installing in XP or 2000 can be found [online.] See all 13 customer reviews...

By Nicholas Smoliga This is a great machine, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has a need to scan a relatively small number of slides and negatives. I'd have rated it five stars save for a single problem with the directions. The one problem that I have with this product is the installation directions. They did not work for me when I followed them to the letter on my Win98SE machine. While all indications were "GO", neither one of my twain-complaint software programs - Paint Shop Pro 7 and the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 included in the box with the scanner - would recognize the existence of the Pacific Image 3650u scanner, though both programs recognized my other two scanners. Frustration led me to request a refund! But, I made one last try, and inadvertently, contrary to the directions, had the 3650u powered up during installation of the Cyber-X update I downloaded from Pacific Image's website. That did the trick! After a reboot all of the software recognized the 3650u scanner. After that, it was smooth sailing, exactly as advertised. 43 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Difficult and not so great results By LLJean We purchased the scanner with expectations of converting our old slides. The scanner was difficult to start up, even following the directions did not work and we had to improvise, but we started the process an hr1 1/2 later. The software it came with is not user friendly. It is difficult to get the results you want. We tried scanning several ways and about 1 out of three slides would have a black line through them. The scanner also has a flaw that it has an open window where dust falls into and the dust comes through on the slides. I had to use a cotton swab to clean it several times throughout the scanning. The scanning time is also about 5-7 minutes for one slide, on it's highest resolution, which is really the only somewhat acceptable picture. After trying several hundred scans I am taking it back. My husband and I are both tech savy and this scanner is just a frustration. 53 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Not for anything other than the most popular consumer films By S. Conklin The first step in scanning either film or slides is to select the type of film used. NONE of the films in my library are included on the selection lists. The small print on the last page of the manual also says that it does not scan Kodachrome slides well. About 90% of my film library is Kodachrome 64 slides. It WON'T handle any film with an ASA of less than 100 or any very high speed films (some of mine are 800 and 1600 speed). When I say it won't handle them - technically, it can, but it takes at least an hour to fudge with the settings to get the scan to turn out like the original picture. This one's going back. But: have a photo editor in place (I used iPhoto with great success and ease)as dust magnifies with the view. The lens bottom in the unit is not accessable so blowing out with the bellows provided seems to be the only option. Brand: Microtek Model: 1108-03-170572 Platforms: Mac, Windows 2000, Windows Me Original language: English Dimensions: 7.94 pounds Professional grade single-pass slide and film scanning True 36-bit color, 4,000 dpi optical resolution, 3.4 Dmax 5,300-element tri-linear array CCD image sensor Batch holders for mounted slides and filmstrips USB and FireWire, PC and Mac compatible

For dedicated 35mm slide scanning, the Microtek ArtixScan 4000tf Scanner provides high dynamic range combined with fine software control to handle a wide range of originals, even with shadow detail. The ArtixScan 4000tf's patented design moves the film holder in a single pass, leaving the lens fixed. This system delivers high dynamic range and image quality. Working with an original scanned in 4,000 dpi optical resolution, you can create several levels of enlargement, which is particularly helpful when you need to crop your original. You can even enlarge a 35mm scan to a full A0 size with pre-press quality output. Scan both negatives and slides (positives) and auto-feed a strip of six frames or four mounted slides. With 16,000,000 dots measured per square inch, a dynamic range of 3.4, and a maximum density of 3.5D, the 4000tf handles transparent originals from 24 x 35mm, 35mm filmstrips, and APS film (with an optional cartridge). It can capture highlights and shadow detail with the color accuracy demanded by imaging professionals. The 4000tf comes with SilverFast Ai 5.x and NegaFix, for delivery of accurate negative scans in a simple, three-step process. The ScanWizard Pro includes a choice of 24-bit or 48-bit output, RGB or CMYK scanning, full 36-bit curve control, ColorSync support, and batch scanning. The unit can be daisy-chained with a Microtek flatbed SCSI scanner and is supported by a one-year warranty. With up to 4,000 dpi optical resolution, the ArtixScan 4000tf defines a new standard in transparency imaging quality. Capturing more than twice as many pixels as some competing models, the ArtixScan 4000tf allows users to enlarge a 35mm scan to a 30-by-40-inch picture with no degradation of output quality. At 3.4 Dmax (maximum density), the ArtixScan 4000tf captures the level of detail and sharpness required by imaging professionals. This SCSI-2 scanner is PC and Mac compatible, including Windows XP.

Is it a "T" or a "TF"? By Irvin Williams The product for sale here is listed as the new Microtek Artixscan 4000tf film scanner, but the Amazon.com product description and the technical data description of its features are both from the old model 4000t.The new 4000tf has a much wider dynamic range (4.2 instead of 3.4), and has Firewire and USB connections instead of SCSI. It also comes with the new Silverfast AI 6.0 instead of 5.x software. It is a much better scanner now. This is a good price for the new 4000tf, but way too high for the discontinued (but still available) 4000t.So which is for sale here, the new Artixscan 4000tf or the old model 4000t? 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Calibration Software Wonderful By Charles Mendez I was looking for a dedicated slide scanner to replace a mid range model scanner that I was using before and was glad to find this one affordably priced. It has calibration software that lets me calibrate my monitor, scanner and printer using the same color scheme which is very helpful when you need the color to be as close to perfect as possible. Some of my clients are very picky and since I have started using the 4000tf I have not had any complaints with regards to the work. I would highly recommend this scanner to anyone out there looking for dedicated slide use. See all 6 customer reviews...

By Digital Momma I just bought this scanner, and have only used it a few times, but I'm already blown away by how easy this is to use! Since my first two kids were born before digital cameras, I have boxes of photos to "digitize". This is making very quick work of it. I like the fact that it even accomodates the older square photos from when I was a kid. It has a color restoration feature on it for these older photos, and so far, so good. It quickly and easily converts back to the standard flatbed for bigger photos. I would definetely recommend this to anyone with a large amount of hard copy photos they would like to preserve. 41 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Wow! Great Photo Scanner! By Stuart Roch I've tried scanning in all my hard copy photos over the years, but the process of doing so on a traditional flatbed scanner has made the process nearly unbearable. It's about time that one of the big players released a scanner with auto-feed capability to scan photos effortlessly at a reasonable price. The scanner itself produces very nice scans and is a compitent piece of hardware. The real gem however is the feeder lid which has made scanning my collection of photos a breeze. No jams, no damage to the photos, and no hassle. Just drop a batch of up to 25 photos in the feed mechanism and go have a snack while the scanner does all the work. The included software does everything you need it to do - adjust color, crop, rotate, or remove red-eye - all with an easy to use interface. Only downsides were that the installation process was a bit messy (it does the job, but seems to be 4 software installation processes in one) and that the auto-feed mechanism can't accomodate 5x7's. If you have a bunch of photo albums around and want to take your memories digital, this is the scanner for you. 30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Does the Job By F. Fernandez Got it 2 days ago. Spent the first day playing around with all the settings specific to the feeder (ADF). Now 250 scans into its life I can recommend it just because of this feature. I've looked around for a long time for this kind of features on a scanner; including an obscure scanner called fotofunnel or the trouble ridden HP w/ADF... anyway other details: I couldn't get Vuescan to show it's Batch feature. So it's useless for this scanner, though it works for the regular scanning features (maybe it'll be updated soon :). Same thing with Silverfast or what ever its name is. Out of 300 scans I've had 1 jam and 3 failure to feed (could'nt grab the photo but managed with a little help). The jam was simple; just open the lid and remove the photo that's on the glass and pull back the incoming photo about half an inch. In other words, I'm not too worried about it damaging my photos. One anoyance is that dust accumulates on the glass after a some 40 scans (more or less depending on how clean your pictures are). Good luck with your research. Got to go, about 3000 scans to go. =======update====== Now on my 2000th scan I can add a few things. -Some types of Black & White prints fail to feed. So I have to push each one an extra 1/4" for the feeder to grab it; after that all is well. -You can keep on stacking as it scans but I chose not to do it b/c I'm concerned about overheating something. So I let it rest a minute or less. -The feeder has a fan that is quite loud. I don't know what it's for but would guess it flattens the photograph to the scanner's glass. -Warped photos WILL jam inside. Nothing serious, but it interrupts the flow. All of my 25+ year old photos have this problem because they were peeled off albums. Ok, back to work... See all 27 customer reviews...

Now it's eaten my film and refuses to relinquish it. I've written to their support. NO REPLY! It was 4 frames etc. Everything was within their specs, but crunch. From them? NO HELP! Skip this piece of junk! Now I have a scanner that might as well be a boat anchor, and they don't care! 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I used it for all my old 35mm film By Daniel B. Phillips I bought this about a year ago brand new and used it for all my old 35mm film. I just liked how you could scan a entire roll of film without having to cut it up into strips like a typical flatbed scanner...sure it may take a little time, but once you get it going you can just go off and work on whatever else...now i am glad to say that i have digital copies of all my film. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Although a bit more pricey than other home scanners, its resolution is unrivaled for the price. I like the one-button scanning it provides. The setup and software are easy. The automatic scanning modes are wonderful and do a great job, however, I like scanning from the TWAIN software from Photoshop because of the customizability it provides. The photo attachment was really surprising to me in the resolution that it provides. I have scanned 35 mm negatives and enlarged them to 5 x 7 inch prints; these prints look like photographs. I even did an 8x10 inch photo enlargement. The photo looks great on the monitor, however, it took forever to do any manipulations. This was not the fault of the scanner, but rather due to the large size of the file (which was around 700 Mbytes). It ended up crashing my computer. I will stick to 5x7 inch prints or use lower resolution scanning in the future.I especially like the on-off switch on the front of the scanner; my previous scanner did not have this item. I have scanned many photographs now and have acheived magnificent results. This is a scanner that can do routine jobs but also specialized business-quality scanning. Thank you Epson! 38 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A Professional Scanning Instrument at an Accessible Price By Marc Ruby™ Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo ScannerI have an old and trusty Nikon 1000 scanner that has done its duty by me for many years. However, I do a lot of medium and large format work and regret not having a more versatile film scanner. Unfortunately, the big scanners vary in cost from a bit too much to near extortion. Since my flatbed scanner was old and horrible I decided to look into buying one of the better scanners with a transparency head. After a great deal of dithering I settled on the Epson 1640 SU.Drivers are available for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and NT 4.0 I installed into my Win 98 machine with minimal effort, using the USB interface. I went from box to up and running in less than a half hour. The transparency head comes in it's own storage case with a set of film holders for standard film sizes (35mm, 120mm and 4x5, and another for doing Epson instant photo prints). It rests on the scanning glass, so it takes all of 5 seconds to install.Accompanying Epson software includes TWAIN drivers, Smart Panel (an easy scan and save interface), and Film Factory Lite (home photo management software). Also included are Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Photoshop 5.0 LE. Since I have the Adobe profession products on my system I did not load these, but they are accepted standards. I did load Scansoft TextBridge Pro, a very nice optical character recognition package. Also included are some ArcSoft utilities and a special offer for Monaco Systems color matching software. This makes a package deal which is only exceeded by HP's top of the line scanner, which costs almost twice as much and has less scanning power.I used a negative from my old Hasselblad with a 150mm lens. I scanned the entire negative at 3600 dpi at the 14 bit black and white setting. File size was 98.87mb and it took about 2.25 minutes to scan. I scanned the image directly into Photoshop 6.0. Resolution and image tonal range was excellent, and extreme enlargement showed image breakdown to be very slow. For my kind of work, the digital image was nearly equivalent to a photographic image. I would rate this as excellent, unexpectedly good for a general purpose scanner.35mm slide scanning is not as good though. The thickness of the slide makes focus a bit softer and there is no holder for slides. I recommend removing the slide from the paper mount and putting it in the 35mm film holder. Then remount the slide in a plastic, reusable mount. Scanning this way, you get an image that is every bit as good as the 120 image.

It makes really noisy and ugly scans from clean pretty photos and slides. The iris is very center weighted and the contrast is extreme. I thought to pay a little extra for a combo scanner was smart, but I feel taken. This is a piece of junk. Save your money. Don't buy this scanner! 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy this item By randy This scanner did not copy the slides well. The program kept locking up and have to reboot the pc and my laptop. Color quality from the copy was very poor. I am returning. It was very DISAPPOINTING! 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Cheap, cheap, cheap! By Titus Bontea The scanner mechanism is made of cheap plastic. It fell apart after some 40 films. Do not expect to be able to use the scanner for too many films or slides. The software is proprietary and you will need to make basic color and brightness adjustments in your paint program. I wish I spent more time to read reviews on other scanners. If all you want is very basic archive of old negatives and you don't have too many of them you may get by with this scanner. The only plus is that was faster then my flat bed Epsom with film scan addaptor. See all 11 customer reviews...

We bought it for film and slide scanning and have not been disappointed in its performance. It's fast, has fantastic resolution (rivaling much more expensive film scanners) and will do multiple slides or negative strips. The "but" refers to the included software. The Epson scanning software is quite good, but I had hoped to be able to use the SilverFast package, which was supposed to be a full software package. Unfortunately, it's a "crippled" application, lacking the ability to convert multiple slides in a single scan into individual pictures (which the full application CAN do). This was a major disappointment. So, hardware great, software not so much. 50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Unreliable Epson V750-M Pro By EpsonUser After making less than 500 scans over the course of 3 years, I recently noticed that images were skewed...rectangular images were scanning as parallelograms! It was slight, but resulted in useless scans. After a bout with Epson tech support, I brought the scanner to their repair depot, who diagnosed the problem as a bad carriage assembly (this includes all the working parts excluding the plastic case). This is a $450 repair with a 90 day warranty. With Epson boasting a MCBF (mean cycles before failure) of 100,000 scans, I thought my unit should do better than 0.5% before failure but Epson disagreed and refused to fund the repair. Epson should stand behind clearly defective units. 61 of 63 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Multi-format Scanner By Richard Eltzroth I've first heard about this Epson scanner about 8 months ago and was very interested in its 6400 dpi scanning resolution capability. With that kind of resolution you can get decent prints from even Super 8 movie film. Check out the very thorough review of the V750 at the Photo-i.co.uk website. After just a week of having this scanner now, I'm impressed with the very good film (slides and negatives) scans it produces. As noted in the above listed review though, the film holders are rather flimsy. For odd sized film, you basically just lay the film flat on the glass. This supposedly can produce ring type artifacts; but I haven't noticed any. The User's Guide on the included CD isn't all that self-explanatory. For the price of this scanner, it would seem that Epson could at least provide a paper User's Guide that could be more detailed. I haven't tried any of the included software yet. The scanner works fine as is. Other than the cheap film holders and User's Guide, I'm very satisfied with it. This is a scanner that is competitive with much more expensive dedicated film scanners and can scan a wide assortment of film formats as well as just regular flat paper scans. A dream product By Electronics Fan (NYC) I needed a scanner mainly for scanning my old prints, negatives and slides. Initially I was going to buy a cheaper photo scanner (Epson 1250), but was disappointed by its poor quality. The 2450 has exceeded my expectations. From prints or negatives, it is producing superb quality scans, and it does it FAST. A few comments from my experience so far:- The scanner comes with an excellent bundle of software. TWAIN is a great product - very user friendly UI for all types of scans (scan to file, print, email, post to the Web). Not too happy with SilverFast though (bad UI and unstable). Photoshop Elements, although a learning curve is needed, is excellent photo editing tool.- Unless you have to print a HiRes photo over 8x10's, use 300dpi: you'll get the same results as higher resolutions, and is much faster (scanning a color print at 300dpi is ~30sec, compared to over 5min at 1600dpi. - If you scan at 1600dpi/48bit, be prepared for huge amount of computer resources for processing the image, both by TWAIN and Photoshop. I have a 2.2GHz P4, 1GB memory, and when I tried to scan a large photo at 1600dpi, about 500MB of memory was used (good thing TWAIN displays how much mem is needed prior to the scan). Photoshop's performance was also degraded.- After some experimentation, I'm getting best results by making some pre-scan enhancements via TWAIN (mainly Gamma & Color adjustments), and add final touches with Photoshop. Assuming you have the time to spend, this will be a fun thing to do, and will feel great when you see that with a decent photo printer you can produce better photos than your originals!- The scanner works fine with XP. Its drivers are not certified by Microsoft for XP, (which means you have to manually install the drivers that come with the scanner), but so far I had no problems.I think this is one of the best buys I made. The only concern I can think of, is its size compared to other scanners (shouldn't be a problem to most of you, unless you live in an apartment in Manhattan as I do...). You can get a scanner at half price or less, but if you need to digitize your photos and slides, this is the way to go. 63 of 63 people found the following review helpful. This Scanner Delivers! By DougMac After searching for the best price for this scanner, I purchased it from Amazon. By using the free shipping option, the Amazon price was right up there with the best. Now for the scanner...I owned an Epson 1650 photo, which was not suitable for scanning 35mm if you want to print larger than 4x6. After reading countless reviews, I decided to upgrade. I have scanned 35mm color and B&W negatives as well as slides with the 2450. 8x10's stand up to darkroom prints made on my Leica Focomat. In many ways they are better, because I use the included Silverfast software plugin to Photoshop to adjust the image at scanning. Further tweaking in Photoshop renders wonderful prints - better than spending hours in the wet lab dodging, burning and bleaching.I also have panorama negatives taken nearly 100 years ago that are roughly 2.25 x 6 inches. The 2450 with it's 4x9 scanning area outshines the competition, allowing me to scan the entire negative at once. This scanner really delivers with medium and large format - 6x6 cm and 4x5. The resultant prints are stunning - much better than I'm able to achieve in the wet lab. The results of scanning vintage photos for which I have no negatives are also superior.I know a dedicated film scanner would give better results, but I can't pay the $3,000 to $5,000 freight for a 4x5 film scanner. Since I don't plan to go bigger than 13x19 prints, I'm happy as a clam with this setup.... 55 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, affordable medium-larger format scanning is here! By A Customer I needed a higher resolution than 1200 dpi for scanning 120 film, and I am glad I finally
