I am replacing an old $ 600 HP scanner with this and am very pleased with the improvement so far. I use a dual-boot XP 32bit / Vista 64bit configuration with 3.1gig AMD X2 CPU and 4gig ram.So far it works perfectly on Vista 64bit. I have the necessary drivers and software and not the CD. Canon warns that it does not work with a different USB cable, I tried a 6ft Belkin and it worked well. HP will not use anything other than the brief, which they sent to work. The software and front panel buttons work without any problems. I have little problem learning the software without the manual, which is a good indication of how easy it is when you have some experience has been. It scans the negatives have done much better than HP ever. The photo-scans are also much better. I love the software touch-ups so far, but has much more time to take a last look at the Thea scanner is much better than HP. I have a Cannon printer and have no need to call their customer support so far. When I tried to updated drivers for HP scanner to get myself and many others said they would not support Vista. Given the $ 600 + cost of the scanner and the large number of them still in use, I feel that this is the sad state of HP customer support shows. That's why I switched to Canon for both my printer and scanner. I will not buy anything HP ever again. 48 of 52 people found the following review helpful. By macnmaine good first scanner I bought this scanner because I have a lot of 20-25 year old slides that I want to scan to throw away to reduce clutter. It was easy to install and the results are better than I expected. Photos works much better than my HP 4 in 1. It will also scan negatives, but not as good as the slides. It has been difficult to find a scanner that will scan slides and work on a Mac that does both very well. 85 out of 100 people found this review helpful. Good and evil - TBD by T. Johnson, I just bought the CanoScan 5600F. Took it home, followed the installation instructions faster, and it's all connected. First, let me clarify some inaccuracies: 1 The scanner box has a sticker on it that says "do not forget to buy a USB cable because it is not!" But in reality came a USB cable with mine. In fact there is a warning to use only this cable, or can not work. Canon, get your act together! I'm glad it came with a cable, but cable is too short to reach my computer, and if it is true that you can not use a standard USB cable, so what should I do? Canon has no accessories on their website. 2nd I read somewhere that this scanner is powered via USB, but it is not. There is a power cord (not just a cable adapter that is an advantage). Powered by USB would have been nice, but I'm not sure a USB has enough power to do it for a scanner anyyway third It is supposed to be warming to the scanner, but in reality it is a short warm (maybe 50-10 seconds) times before scanning. The same tests are good and fast. I had to do some tinkering with the settings before I could really do any analysis. It seems that there are settings and preferences everywhere, and lots of screens to waste time - I was hoping for something more simple. I was hoping to find a quick and easy way to make copies, scan documents and scan images. I have not been able to get the scanner to function as one of the buttons on the scanner without having to go something, click on the computer. This is a big draw for me, because I really wanted to be able to make copies of a single button press the Scan button (printing on color laser printers). I'm still trying to work and then product support call where the scanner really seems to do a good job at first sight - it's fast e.
